Shall we start the sweepstakes as to which will be the first channel to dip their toe into 480x576? 352x576? 352x288?

Ssshh!!!! Zip it! Don't put ideas into their heads! If they do it, we can blame you for suggesting the idea to them in the first place!

Nothing new. Stations via satellite have been using those resolutions for years. Arqiva carry services at 480x576, 352x576 and 352x288 on satellite transponders on Eutelsat Hot Bird at 13°E!

Furthermore, a document for Ofcom's consumption suggested the idea of local TV channels being broadcast in 480x576 as one option.

Is the "x576" set in stone for SD? I know there's a reference to "x288" but I was thinking along the lines of something in between - e.g. we have 544x576 and we're talking about maybe 480x576, both for 16:9 broadcasts. Wouldn't it make more sense if these numbers were the other way round, i.e. 576x544 or 576x480? Or some other combination where the horizontal resolution is greater than the vertical resolution?

Height has to be 576 or 288 I believe. Hangover from old analogue days.

They should've never allowed 1440x1080 in the HD spec but at least that seems to be gone now.

I beg to differ. A blurry picture is watchable (otherwise people wouldn't have used VHS). Sudden, brief blockiness really pulls me out of the experience.

Create and Craft and Ideal World have become 16:9 today.

Create and Craft are showing a repeat which is 4:3 stretched but the "ads" were proper widescreen.

The average viewer will be wondering why everyone is so skinny on Ideal World
