restoring iTunes from back-up to new lap top
mimi dlc

Wisely, I backed up all data, including iTunes files on an external hard drive.
Stupidly, my lap top was stolen.

A few months later, I have a newish laptop with iTunes software installed, and all my backed files on external hard drive.
I don't want to drag all my saved iTunes files onto laptop internal hard drive as that will use up the majority of its memory.

I can find guides on how to transfer exisiting itunes from local hard drive to external and run itunes like that, but can't work out how to get lap top to find and run the system externally.

I worked out how to change the settings so that a new ripped CD will appear in the visible libray, but be stored alongside all the "old" stuff on the Ex hard drive.

How do I get the stuff from hard drive into my nearly empty library?

(As you may guess, I'm not very tech minded, so apologies if my explanation is a bit woolly)

Thanks for any suggestions.

DOH!

I think I have making this far too complicated.....

Apparently I just highlight the files in my Ex hard drive and drag to iTunes window

Have checked that the original files are still safe in External drive and haven't ended up laptop memory, so that's good.

Now dare I sync my iPod...?

Each installation of iTunes on a fresh PC is considered to be a library. Any files NOT on the laptop but ON the iPod will be lost if you choose to synchronize with the "new" library. You'll get a message along the lines of "I see you're trying to sync this iPod, be aware this iPod was previously synced with a different iTunes library and syncing with this library will delete all current data on it" Ish.

There are probably other apps which can suck all the music off your iPod and once you've done that you can add the tracks to your laptop iTunes library.

Thanks for that advice frightlever.

There is nothing on my iPod that was not in the original iTunes library (that I backed up) so I don't think there will be a problem.
In fact your warning has actually reassured me that it is OK to sync my iPod.
