I've just programmed that in. I really enjoy the concerts.

I've been following a 3 part programme with much the same title, although I think that's just coincidence. It takes you through a year in the life of 6 international students studying at the Munich opera and has been really interesting.

It's showing two versions of the nutcracker, one in Full HD, the 2007 Mariinsky ballet production conducted by Valery Gergiev, I think this usually shows from 20:00-21:30 but may well show at other times , the other is the 2003 Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker, it's not HD though and the interlacing is broken.

Have to say I really enjoyed Martha...

It's a film version with the cast as follows:

Martha - Lucy Peacock
Lyonel - Rüdiger Wohlers
Nancy - Elisabeth Steiner
Plumkett - Nikolaus Hillebrand
Lord Tristan - Klaus Hirte
Richter - Manfred Röhrl
Pantomime - Samy Molcho

Martha and Nancy were quite attractive too which always helps, but a very enjoyable production all round IMO.

It's being repeated:

It is in the original German so the Last Rose of Summer becomes Letzte Rose, but that doesn't detract at all... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMGga-EnvvQ

Another live broadcast from the Met coming up today, "Nixon in China". I have a distinct feeling it won't be one for me, but assuming the transmission details are the same it'll be on Atlantic Bird here if anyone's interested.

Thanks for that! I looked for it on ZDFTheaterkanal throughout December and was disappointed not to see it there as I've really enjoyed it in previous years. I'll happily sacrifice "Nixon in China" to watch it!

Did anybody find a feed with English subtitles?

In the past I have used the feed on 0.8 deg W. This time it appeared to have audio only - no video! This also applied to all the feeds with Vpid 308 (even on 5degW). Vpid309 seemed OK.

Unless I was doing something really stupid.

Nixon in China was not quite my cup of tea anyway.

Regards to all

Am I missing the obvious at www.mezzo.tv ? I can find the programme guide and I can find the section about opera. What I don't seem to be able to do is put the two together to see when a particular opera will be broadcast.

The downlinks for the Met Opera broadcasts are specifically for Cinemas in Europe, hence different subtitles.

For some reason the ones with Vpid 309 worked OK, the ones with Vpid 308 appeared to have sound only.

Could be finger trouble on my part?

Regards,

What sort of stuff do they study? Is it like a performing arts college?

Not really. It's based at the Munich opera and there are only a handful of them in the programme, all (I'd guess) in their mid 20s.

They study singing mainly, as you'd expect, but also acting and stagecraft. They take small roles in some of the Munich opera's productions and they also did some concerts and recitals in their own right. Everything that could help their entry into life as a professional opera singer.

I think the ROH has a similar programme for young singers.

Further description here...

Netrebko, Garanca, Domingo ... at the Vienna State Opera
Ioan Holender, director of the Vienna State Opera is one of the
impresario of the last great European music. To
among his predecessors in office Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss,
Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan and Lorin Maazel. But in the 140 -
has year history of the legendary hotel on the Ringstrasse
no one ruled so long as he does.

A glamorous farewell to give the stars of the conductor scene
the baton in his hand. It conduct including Zubin
Mehta, Fabio Luisi, Antonio Pappano, Simone Young, Bertrand de
Billy, Franz Welser-Möst and Marco Armiliato.

Contributors:
Angelika Kirchschlager (mezzo soprano)
Diana Damrau (soprano)
Anna Netrebko (soprano)
Barbara Frittoli (soprano)
Elina Garanca (Mezzo Soprano)
Jose Cura (Tenor)
Plácido Domingo (tenor)
Ramón Vargas (tenor)
Siegfried Jerusalem (Tenor)
Thomas Hampson (baritone)
Thomas Quasthoff (bass baritone)
Waltraud Meier (mezzo-soprano)
Most bizarre...

I realise it was only 45 minutes long and so obviously cut however I didn't see Elina Garanca at all but did see Natalie Dessay who isn't even mentioned.

The dresses they had the women in, especially Anna, were absolutely dreadful....

But musically what there was of it was good, the two highlights for me being Anna and Natalie.
