Well, I did warn you It wasn't improved by the German either.
Well I finally got around to watching Orpheus, Odysseus and Poppea...

Particularly the first and last had been turned into some sort of grotesque non stop orgy with the characters dressed or undressed as they were for absolutely no good reason. The entire production was complete and utter bile which only detracted from music which to be honest isn't my favorite to start with.

Yes we were warned, but I honestly didn't expect it to be that bad... Odysseus which IMHO was the least sleazy of the three was just dull...

The feed information from Satelliweb was 11498V 14000 on 0.8West but when I scanned this on Humax Foxsat HD no channels were found. Any ideas why I couldn't get this transmission ?

I don't get anything there either, not even a sniff of signal so the info is either wrong or it's not available in the UK...

Try 5W F:11592 - Pol: H - SR: 14000

How does it compare to the BBC signal on that satellite?

If you missed the Opera de Paris recent broadcast, all is not lost. A 2008 performance of the Tales of Hoffmann in Geneva is being broadcast on 3SAT (19E) on 6th October 19.15 BST until 22.05. Marc Laho as Hoffmann and Stella Doufexis as his muse. The blurb says in German that "Hoffmann's art world, his erotic desires and his yearning for love are shown in cool and sexually charged images". Make of that what you will

Having read the review of this 'opera' at the time, I decided it was not for me, thanks.-

French producer Olivier Py caused an uproar among Geneva operagoers with a staging of Tales of Hoffmann that features full-frontal male and female nudity and simulated on-stage lesbian and heterosexual sex. Audiences were left "gasping, giggling or reduced to stunned silence" by the production, which interprets the popular opera as an indictment of capitalist society. Py adds several simulated sex acts, including one between the poet Hoffman and the life-sized doll Olympia as she sings her main aria. Soprano Patricia Petitbon is a major tour de force as she sings Olympia wearing only a transparent body stocking in a Venetian bordello. (Eng. Subtitles)

Sounds like an orgy with the music and singing as an afterthought, what a shame !

@Wombat66: I wonder if you actually watched this? It seems you have cut and paste verbatim from the summary (not review) at classicaltv.com. Don't be put off. There are other reviews that suggest this is the one to beat.

I did watch it and to my surprise found it very good.I dislike regietheater unless it is to the point. Here Py sticks closely to the spirit of the libretto. After all, Hoffmann is a drug fed Gothic and sexual fantasy. It is legitimate to consider it an indictment of lust and materialism. The singing is first class and the staging remarkable for its flexibility. I can stand a small amount of nudity if it is appropriate but each to their own taste.

I also enjoyed the recent Hoffmann from Opera de Paris.

Thanks for your reply, I did try all these from Satelliweb but did not pick anything up .I have a different dish and receiver from last year and it may be that the dish needs re-aligning.Did you get the Met on these frequencies shown?

I tried all the frequencies on 0.8W and 5.0W as indicated by Stanley Cassidy and for the first time ever failed to find them. Very disappointing, so I'm p*******d off. My positioner still finds the satellites so I'm wondering if I have a receiver problem.

I wonder if other folks had any problems.

Regards to all

I'm afraid I forgot, I was involved in polishing one of my lamps and by the time I remembered I was too late...

Really annoyed as it was one of my favorite operas, although this time sadly missing Rolando. I loved him playing that part and treasure my DVD with him and Anna in the lead roles.

Still my lamp came up nice...

The one I normally have most success with is:

Atlantic Bird 3 (5.0°W) Frequency: 11592 - Pol: H - SR: 26620

And I pick the one with the French subtitles, however as I mentioned above I forgot all about it this time

opera compact
Bellini's "Norma"

I intend getting an external hard drive for my Ross box. Is there any particular make or type I should avoid or one that you can recommend ? The manual says that the drive must be FAT32 formatted. Do they come this way or do I have to do it ?

If the Ross manual lists any compatible hard drives,I'd go with them,in the first instance.
If not then try contacting Ross for suggestions.
IIRR,ideally the hard drive should be 5400RPM,and not the 7200RPM used commonly in computers.
To format the drive as FAT32,should be easily done,by your Ross receiver, once you connect the external hard drive to your Ross receiver, you'll either be prompted to format the hard drive or select via the Ross' menu.

Next opera from the Met is this Saturday at 6PM BST- Otello

"Verdi's Shakespearean masterpiece returns to the Met with two exciting casts.

Johan Botha sings the title role opposite the acclaimed Desdemona of star soprano Renée Fleming, with Falk Struckmann as Iago and Semyon Bychkov conducting"

Radio3 does not appear to be broadcasting the Met live this season, wonder why?

Hope I have more luck with the down links than last week.

I don't know why Radio 3 is not broadcasting them this season.

Tonight...Swan Lake from the ROH (I know it's ballet!). I think it will be on 0.8W as they were testing it last week.

Yes, it is being shown at my local Odeon cinema at 7.15 pm and has come through on 0.8W previously. Fingers crossed!
