One of the reasons for us getting a motorised dish was so that my wife could watch the French channels as she speaks French... But she doesn't really keep an eye on the listings, just watches occasionally to "keep her ear in" as she puts it...
Do you know which channels in particular we need to keep an eye on? Unfortunately a lot of the main ones require a viewing card which we don't have, so we only watch the free ones. http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2012/...ch-on-fransat/ |

Oh bother, that's the second year running I've missed it. (Thanks for the heads up though.) It's been really good in the past and I only wish I could understand more of Max Raabe's deadpan deliveries. (From the bits I do follow, it always sounds very clever and very funny.)
Fingers crossed they repeat it and one of us notices in time. |

Lohengrin Live
Arte on 19E are timetabled to present a live performance of Lohengrin Friday 7 December, 19.15 - 23.20 GMT. I am puzzled because also advertised is live by satellite cinema screening of Lohengrin from La Scala at 15.00 on the same day, conducted by Barenboim, with Pape, Kaufmann, Lucic, Harteros, and Herlitzius. Seems like a surfeit of Lohengrin. However it is one of my favourite operas

3Sat: Beethoven's Missa Solemnis
Not an opera, I know, but it is of interest since conducted by Harnoncourt and has Marlis Petersen and Gerald Finley singing. 3Sat, 19E, 1st December, 19.15 - 20.50 GMT.

Lohengrin addendum
Having checked on various websites, I guess that Arte are showing this as a delayed live, catchup broadcast from La Scala.

I think you are correct, the live performance at La Scala is shown on their web-site as 4PM GMT

Agreed. 16.00 GMT start. The cinema presentation will be 1018 + dolby surround sound versus Arte HD's downscaled 720 and stereo.

A bit cheeky of ARTE, don't you think?

sounds like a good charity concert, a pity that it clashes with the Nutcracker from ROH, perhaps it will be repeated

Very pleased your box behaved itself this time, have you enough German to translate any of Max Raabe's comments which seem to have the audience falling about ?

"How nice, when a fulfilling career matches ones personal interests, as it did for Frau Violetta Valery. She is respected by both her colleagues and the customers of her trade as a full time prostitute in a brothel. But then, for the love of Alfredo Germont, a student from the provinces, she hangs up her suspenders. After a while, missing the routine of her former job, she goes back on the game. Alfredo's father Gerard was not too thrilled with this decision. Hear him in this interpretation of the song "Come back soon lad". |

Thanks for that, I can now see why the Germans find Max's comments so hilarious, together with his dead-pan delivery. Just wish there were English sub-titles
