I am pleased to see that other organizations are beginning to see the potential of showing live satellite broadcasts- Two enterprising restaurants in the Lake District have installed the equipment and now serve drinks before the performances, and meals in the intervals. Brilliant !

Thanks for that, I can now see why the Germans find Max's comments so hilarious, together with his dead-pan delivery. Just wish there were English sub-titles
You're welcome. My woeful ignorance of most opera plots doesn't help as I'm often "boxing in the dark". Having just looked up a plot synopsis, I now get the bit in the intro to "Die Meistersingers" where Max announces that Eva will be betrothed to the winner of "Nuremburg's Got Talent" the following day!

The intro to "Rolando Furioso" was along the lines of:

"One can see how a situation can escalate when, alone on an island, a licentious mezzo soprano and a libidinous tenor let their basic instincts take over. It comes from "Rolando Furioso", translated as "Raving Roland".

(By the way, I think I should have put that Alfredo came from Provence, not the provinces - my ignorance of plots again!)

Only when it went FTA for a while a year or so ago. Other than that, it's always been encrypted when I've looked.

My understanding is that Mezzo works through commercial providers rather than through individual viewers. Thus it is generally a component of Pay channel packages. If you look at the Mezzo website, the UK is unique (?) in the EU in not having anybody offering Mezzo TV. I would GUESS that that is because, in the UK, the only likely broadcaster able to offer it would be Sky and they probably see it as competition for Sky Arts. I would see Sky as much more attractive if they offered Mezzo!

I have often wondered whether the lack of Mezzo in the UK could be the subject of a complaint re EU competition rules and the supposed open market.

Sitting in my house in deepest Norfolk watching Lohengrin in HD via Germany ArteHD, wondering if it is just some utilitarian commercial consideration that Mezzo is competition for Sky arts that prevents th UK having it. Perhaps it is more that the UK is intrinsically philistine. I have no need to subscribe to the loathsome Sky but I might compromise if Mezzo were there too. In the meantime I will have waste time looking for the FTA delights.

Welcome to the thread. Don't forget to post details of anything you find here please!

Edited to add that I've just been here http://www.operadeparis.fr/saison_20...-bizet/detail/ Apparently Carmen is going to be broadcast live to cinemas on Thursday 13th December. Might be worth keeping an eye on the live feeds that evening.

Even before Sky Arts launched, when ArtsWorld was still broadcasting,Mezzo was not available to the UK market, despite being available in mainland Europe.

There was an announcement at the end of "Lohengrin" to the effect that the next live broadcast would be a Verdi evening on Arte on 31st December from Baden-Baden.

Just tuned into the Met broadcast on Thor.

The Guardian article was about the controversy before the performance. At the premiere, Barenboim cleverly redeemed the situation at the end of Lohengrin by getting the whole cast and audience to sing the Italian national anthem which, of course, is by Verdi. Incidentally, as commented here before, the Arte broadcast was not, as advertised, live, but recorded a few hours earlier and in poorer quality than the satellite feed. So, not even delayed live!

905. It clashes with the live Royal Ballet Nutcracker which starts at 19.15 GMT.

I recorded and not yet watched it, so far from live for me...

I've only just caught up with previous seasons MET broadcasts, I'd like to say I left the best until last but unfortunately it was the enchanted Island which I really didn't enjoy at all.

I finally got around to watching Lohengrin the other day...

TBH I could happily have missed the first act in it's entirety which has little to do with the production and much more to do with the opera itself.

I enjoyed the second half far more.

You've all beaten me to it!! I've been in Nuremburg for the past few days. I bought a "Hörzu" there which has more comprehensive listings than the German TV guides that are available here. Yesterday evening I spent the flight from Nuremburg to Amsterdam going through it listing the opera programmes. Just came here to post my findings and they're all already there!

(On the plus side, it's great to know there are so many of us interested in opera on satellite and prepared to take the time to post details here!)

I'll just be happy if I still have a signal by the time all these broadcasts are due. There's a raging gale here today and if it knocks the dish out of alignment, as it has done once or twice in the past, I'll be stuck until January!
