I have no idea of the technical bits but the 0.8W feed with English subtitles which I watch has the subtitles embedded in the broadcast picture (ie they aren't decoded or added by your sat box or TV set) and so they should be there all the time on any recording you make from that feed. Not having a hard disk in my satellite box, I simply record to DVD-RW (only SCART not HD) and the subtitles are there.

3 Sat. 19E. Saturday March 9th. 20.30 - 22.35 GMT.
Ligetti's Le Grand Macabre. This is the production in Nov 2011, from the Liceu in Barcelona. I saw the same production at ENO. This is an imaginative production staged by La Fura del Baus of Valencia Ring fame. I have it on blu-ray. Strongly recommended, even if you don't normally like surrealist opera.

Arte 19E. Monday March 11th. 21.15 - 23.35 GMT. Verdi's La Traviata, from the Aix festival, 2011. Dessay, Tezier and Castronovo. Not my favourite Violetta, but should be good value.

I am a fan of Natalie but I have to agree.... I'll still record it though.

The next Met broadcast is:

Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini

March 16, 2013, 12 pm ET

Another that I've never seen....

One strange observation from the Met. Opera broadcast.

The English feed on 0.8W was miles out of lip sync.although I have a feeling they may have tried to tweak it. During the second interval I went to the English feed on 15 W - lip sync was perfect. Maybe something to watch out for in the future.

Fantastic opera...visually stunning, what theatre should be about.

On second thoughts it could have been my receiver failing to lock on to the signal correctly - I think the recording I made is OK

Yes, I had an issue a while back where I didn't have live sound but the recording was fine... I can't remember what channel it was and it's never happened again so you never know next time it may be fine.

I tend to get a better signal on 5W so watch that if the weather is likely to be an issue...

Yes, I tend to get a better signal on 5W, but that has French sub titles.

I too found, with a previous receiver, that on occasions it would lock on to a signal with pictures but no sound. The cure seemed to be to cut away to another channel and then back.

I think my lip sync problem could have been resolved that way, certainly the recording was fine.

Another of life's mysteries.

I was quite impressed by this production, including Natalie.

Did none of you pluck up courage for Le Grand Macabre? You missed a treat.
