mmm...looks like one to miss! I might opt for Onegin from the Met.

Regards to all.

Each to their own. Like I say we are spoilt for choice. I see nothing inconsistent with the libretto in the pictures of the Vienna production of Fanciulla. The downside of Fanciulla of course is that it will have German subtitles which is a problem if the opera is unfamiliar. My wife and I were going to toss a coin as to which one we watched, but I think we will go for Fanciulla after reading the reviews of Onegin. The NY Times refers to its "drab production" (co-produced with ENO!); act 1 takes place in a greenhouse and Tatyana writes her letter in a bed-less mock bedroom. The FT refers to Gergiev's sluggish tempos, leaden accents and rote sentimentality. While all seem agreed Netrebko did a good job some of the other main characters are sharply criticised. A hard call this one!

Indeed a hard one to call...La fanciulla is one of my all time favourites, but it still requires a decent production! Ah well...decisions.

Unfortunately I was away, and as there's no way of knowing the feeds in advance couldn't record it...

Was it good?

I'm missing them all! I'm currently in a small flat in the German Tirol turning my hand to all sorts of DIY. A satellite receiver and television will be arriving shortly, but the dish here isn't motorised and it serves the whole building, so I'll still be restricted to Astra 19E.

Seemed pretty good to me. A pleasant evening spent sprawled across the sofa. Tchaik's Onegin was new to me. Dodgy sound during a Renee Fleming backstage interview but performance was spot on otherwise.

And Tatiana? If Anna didn't turn up I won't feel quite so bad about not seeing it...

It's annoying I missed it especially as I'm not too bothered about seeing the next one to be perfectly honest...

Sorry you missed this, I thought it was quite good production except for some poor quality singing in the minor roles .Bits have started to appear on Youtube

Finally this morning....

I made myself a coffee with my wife's new coffee machine and sat down to watch it. I'm so pleased that I didn't miss this one as it was IMHO one of the best productions I've seen for ages. I loved the staging, I loved the slightly more sympathetic portrayal of Onegin and I thought all four main characters performed it well.

I was reminded quite a lot of the film Dr Zhivago with the atmosphere and indeed some of the backdrops, particularly in the duel scene...

I was prepared to be disappointed after seeing some of the reviews, but nothing could be further from the truth.

On 5W they used the same feeds as the MET opera again so it's good news if they both plan to stick with these for the season...

We have Tosca from the MET this weekend too.

Don't forget Tosca live from the MET tonight!

It's one of my favourite operas, so really looking forward to it, although I'm unfortunately out at a firework party so will have to record and watch later.
