Many thanks...I was not able to alter the audio setting, but the owners handbook indicates that it should decode AC3.

However, I recorded about 15 minutes anyway, and have transferred it to my laptop.

VLC media player won't touch it.
MPC-HC player will play it quite happily...including the audio.
VideoReDo also plays it complete with audio.

Thanks for your help...this obviously needs more investigation.

Renée Fleming at The Superbowl? - not Opera as we know it, Jim... She will be in Dvorak's Rusalka 'Live in HD' this Saturday at 5.55 GMT. I must admit I don't know it, so will 4 hours be a joy or not?

Any idea if it will be on any "mainstream" transponders (I don't have a steerable dish)? The "Song to the Moon" from Rusalka is one of my favourite pieces, but I don't know any of the rest of the opera. It's being shown in a cinema near me, but I couldn't face 4 hours in a cinema seat for something I don't know, at 36euros a ticket.

Sorry, no helpful information. Usually on 5W and 0.8W and it is always worth tinkering at minimal cost: my "moveable" old dish sits on a picnic table in a heavy garden umbrella base and works!

However, all is not lost: RTE Lyric FM has the radio relay at 7pm (Sky 0165)and BBC Radio 3 has it on Monday 10th at 7.30pm.

I also have a flyer for the ROH and Don Giovanni Live in Cinemas at 6.45pm on Wednesday 12th February.

CORRECTION: Checking my new parish magazine (aka Radio Times), Rusalka is on Radio 3 on MONDAY 10th at 7PM not 7.30. Sorry.

TONIGHT

From the MET

Dvořák's Rusalka
February 8, 2014, 12:55 pm ET

The great Renée Fleming returns to one of her signature roles, singing the enchanting “Song to the Moon” in Dvorák’s soulful fairy-tale opera. Tenor Piotr Beczala co-stars as the Prince, Dolora Zajick is Ježibaba, and dynamic young maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium.

This isn't one I've seen before, so new ground for me

Also coming soon... I have to confess I also use this thread as my diary so I don't forget myself

From the ROH

Don Giovanni
12 February 2014

Kasper Holten, ROH Director of Opera, presents a mesmerizing new production of Mozart’s sublime tragicomedy.

Signal's started to come through on Thor 0.8 W

11494V 13310 with German subtitles

11512V 13310 with English subtitles

Hope the wind dies down a bit here in the next couple of hours!

I've just changed my set up here so I can record directly onto my DVD recorder. If I could just work out how to change the aspect ratio from the 4:3 back to the 16:9 it is when I watch directly though the satellite receiver, it would be perfect! (If I try the aspect ratio button on the TV remote it just comes up as "Feature not available" and I can't find anything in any of the menus on any of the 3 machines.)

I might try the technical forum later. Like you I'm too involved in the Winter Olympics at the moment! I've been watching the Figure skating too, albeit on the red button.

To be honest the figure skating and ice dance competitions are the only bit I really follow, the rest I just sort of dip in and out of.

One fundamental difference from previous Met. broadcasts - well at least on 0.8W 11.472.

The subtitles are now embedded in the data stream so can be switched on and off with the remote...also a choice of language. I found English and French.

In previous seasons the subtitles were inserted into the video, so could not be switched in and out. So in the past we have had to select the appropriate transponder with the preferred language.

Disadvantage of the new system is that the subs. come in at peak white, which can be too obtrusive.

Apart from that I don't have any software that will burn a DVD and preserve the data stream with the subtitles.

Described by Susan Graham as a "Vintage Production" Utterly fabulous, so can we have more "Vintage Productions".
Renee Fleming is devine.

DVDStyler can do that, if you have the subtitles in a separate file, and when playing with Handbrake recently I found that it can insert the subtitles from a DVD into an .mkv file.

I wonder if that's the same on 5W now, that would be really handy as I always end up watching the French feed...

I didn't think to look at 5.0W...it would certainly be nice if the french subs. could be switched off. I think ROH tomorrow will also have selectable subtitles. We shall see.
