Friday 15th August...Il Trovatore from Salzburg with Domingo and Anna Netrebko.
On Arte and ORD 19.15 UK time As usual, ARTE France will be showing the same programme, but 35 minutes later than the German transmission--- Very handy if you miss the start on German ! |

Met Opera
First production of the new season tonight- Le Nozze di Figaro 6PM. I assume the transmission will be on the same satellites as last season, for me that was 0.8W or5W

Coming soon from the ROH, one I'm rather looking forward to:
L'elisir d'amore 26 November 2014 Laurent Pelly’s acclaimed production of Donizetti’s opera radiates tenderness, humour and southern sunshine, starring Vittorio Grigolo, Lucy Crowe and Bryn Terfel. But before that from the Met we have: Bizet’s Carmen - November 1, 2014, 12:55 pm ET Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia - November 22, 2014, 12:55 pm ET |

Was Carmen on the "normal" 5W feed with French subtitles? I set my box as we were out all day but got nothing
I don't think it even tried to record and I'm not sure why... I don't know how the box responds if you try to record a channel with no signal so I don't know if it was just a timer glitch or whether there was no feed and that's it's normal response in such a case. |

There appeared to be two signals on 5.0W 11.592H 26620...one with French subs., the other with Spanish sub. (Not sure whether that was the same as last season)

Subs
Quote:
I can only get 0.8W at present and could not find the signal with English subs. I was assuming last year that this was on 5W. To get the English I had to record via scart lead and have it in SD. I thought this production was very drab ,both costumes and scenery. I am used to Carmen being a bit more colourful.
I too thought Carmen was pretty mediocre...with the exception of Micaela (Anita Hartig) it was acting by numbers. Regards, Phil Thomas |

Wagner's Rienzi on France 3 (5W)
Sorry, have only just spotted it. Wagner's Opera "Rienzi, Last of the Tribunes" is on the FTA France 3 tonight on satellite 5W at a quarter past midnight. Cast: Torsten Kerl / Rienzi; Marika Schönberg / Irène; Richard Wiegold / Steffano Colonna; Géraldine Chauvet / Adriano and Stefan Heidemann / Paolo Orsini. This is Wagner's longest opera (!), but here cut down to approx 3 hours. It is the production from the Theatre du Capitole, Toulouse in 2012, which I have on blu-ray.
If you don't know Rienzi, it had its premiere the year before the "Flying Dutchman" and is generally considered the first significant Wagner opera. Torsten Kerl has made a major speciality of this role. Some stirring music, particularly in the overture, but I prefer the production from Deutsche Oper, Berlin, also available on blu-ray, where Rienzi is compared to Mussolini. |

Missed Operas :-(
Sorry Phil, I only saw it at the last minute. In his first opera Die Feen, Wagner took up the style of Weber / Marschner. There was a good concert performance of it in London a couple of years ago. The second opera Liebesverbot follows the style of Italian opera. I was involved in a performance of that while at Uni. The third opera, Rienzi emulates Mayerbeer and French Grand Opera but has some grand music and a foretaste of things to come. The fourth one was the Flying Dutchman, when he developed his own voice.
To add to your irritations, last night there was a live broadcast from Munich of Manon, with Kaufmann and Opolais, on NDR. I knew it was on BR Klassik radio and looked to see if it was on Bavarian TV. Didn't expect it to be on NDR. I missed it too To add insult to injury the German critics report that they were fantastic together, real chemistry; the opera couple to watch, never mind Trebbers. I suspect there are more revelations to come.
