It's a little odd watching it sung in English with French subtitles, I really don't like extensive dialog and the "comedy" largely escapes me...

However, it was big, colourful and quite watchable... Just not my thing.

I recorded the Met transmission as usual on my external HDD, and while it plays back beautifully on the television I cannot get it to play properly on my lap-top. Looking at the details I find it has recorded in .ts files which even VLC cannot handle properly. The previous transmissions from the Met gave no problems. I wonder why they have changed the system . Any ideas, anyone?

I'm sure that's what I used in the past to play .ts files... If I recall correctly it doesn't index scenes etc but I'm sure it played as that's the format my old box used to record in.

The feed on 7.0E has English subtitles inserted into the Video...so you can't switch them off. I thought the production was superb...visually stunning.

I have the same problems...bizarre, because VLC used to play them without any problems. I used Video ReDo to edit them. Still saved as .ts files but they then play OK on VLC. Various other progs will convert them to mpeg or similar, they will then all play on VLC.

This is one I really want to catch. Anyone know how long before the actual performance that the live feed starts?

Live feed usually starts about half hour before. check satelliweb for transmission details. Performance starts at 7.30 before that there is an intro to the opera at 7.15.by Richard E Grant

Not as generous as the Met...but usually you get about an hour of line up time. And often the downlinks are tested around about lunch time on the day. Hopefully one of the Geeks on Satelliweb will find them.

Regards to all,

Thanks for the heads up. I've only just got in and it looks as though they've finished testing as there's nothing coming through on any of them now. Will try again this evening.

Oddly, an "encore" performance of ROH's Andre Chenier is on 0.8E 11471V /14400 at the moment. Missed much of it, but I thought "encore" performances were recorded and played out locally in cinemas. Any info? Was the "Live" performance (which I missed) interrupted by bad weather, technical problems or similar?

There was an announcement at the beginning that there could be signal problems from time to time on the Continent, but that was all. It came through loud and clear here. Like you I just assumed any re-runs would be recordings.

Arte tomorrow (8th Feb) 17.30 - 1815 British time are showing a Joseph Calleja concert which he gave in Vienna in January 2013. It's a tribute to Mario Lanza.

My timer recording is already set!

I know you are Calleja's biggest fan, have you noticed the Met performance of Macbeth with the divine Anna is on tomorrow (Monday) on BBC Radio 3 at 7.30 PM ?

No I didn't, thanks for the heads up!

(I see Lucic is the baritone, I enjoyed him in "Chénier".)

Just been channel hopping and come across "La Cenerentola" from the Liceu with Florez and DiDonato on ZDF Kultur. It's being repeated from 01.00 - 03.45 tonight (6th) British time.

(It looks like ZDF Kultur may be having another change of direction, I thought they'd given up showing opera.)

Bother it, does much happen in the first 15 minutes?!

I was out all afternoon, got back here just after 5pm thinking I had plenty of time only to find the Met transmission had already started.
