Thanks for the heads up, I'm almost tempted with Boris, although I doubt I would normally be able to cope with it, but I notice John Tomlinson is in the cast. I thought he'd retired! I saw him live several times in the 1980s and early 90s and, certainly in those days, he had an absolutely electric stage presence many actors would have envied.

Totally off topic, but may be of interest to some here...
Sky Arts is available as part of the Now TV entertainment package. Worth considering as an alternative to a full sky setup.

I recorded Butterfly from 0.8W. Whilst out I listened to the EBU feed in the car on Radio 3 and it was interrupted. Imagine my disappointment when the video recording was also interrupted with many minutes of pixellated junk and no sound. I'm unable to see any signal strength, of course, but it appears to have been somewhere in the uplink chain as the rubbish seems to be high quality and not showing the symptoms of loss of signal locally. (Good clear weather here at the time). Presumably cinemas had trouble too. Do people get a refund? A previous Met transmission warned of possible interference for North American viewers, probably sun spots or similar. Maybe we'll get an "encore".
There was an apology on Radio 3 at the end of the performance for problems with the transmission so I think your diagnosis of a feed or uplink problem is probably correct,

Odd, because we watched it on the 7.0E with no problem apart from a slight glitch when Deborah Voight was doing her first intro. Unfortunately, I subsequently screwed up my recording whilst transferring to the laptop.
All very strange.

Unfortunately I didn't record it and as it happens I didn't see it live either...
I was out and unexpectedly didn't get back time. It might have been interesting to have seen whether the 5W feed was ok.

Arrived in Germany earlier this week & I've just bought a TV guide which runs from 16th April to 13th May. I haven't had time to look through it completely yet, but noticed the following.
3Sat 16th April 20.15 - 21.45 (CET) Liederabend with Juan Diego Floréz and Vincenzo Scala (pianist). It's from the Salzburg Festival last year.
Will keep you updated as and when I come across more.

The signal strength is usually down compared with any of the other satellites, whilst the quality is normally only about 65% on my Technomate. However, this normally seems to be adequate.
The big advantage for me is that the subtitles (English) are inserted into the video so that if necessary I can make a DVD of the programme without losing the subs.
All the other feeds have the subs. inserted into the data stream, which means they can be switched on and off and also a choice of language as well. Unfortunately, thus far I have been unable to find a way of transferring from the Technomate format to DVD.

Just wondering whether you opera/classical music fans would subscribe to a high quality UK satellite channel, even of this would mean you may have to pay for a new freesat type of settop box?
This may not be the best thread on which to ask as most of us here have motorised dishes, so we already have access to a lot more than the average viewer.
For me it's enough, I can't speak for the others though, they may think differently.

That's a good point, still seeing that this is a mainly 'UK' board, perhaps worth asking the question. At a guess, many will have a UK based TV service and may well be interested in a different service with dedicated high-quality Classical Music/Performing Arts channel.

German channels mainly, but you can also pick up live feeds intended for cinema. In the UK there is sky arts although that is by no means a dedicated "classical" channel. There are also streaming services you can subscribe to.
In answer to your earlier question the need for a dedicated box would put me off to be honest. In the main lounge I already have the satellite box, a BT box, a Now TV box and a PVR/Blue-ray player. The setup in our smaller lounge is just as crowded and has the Wii as well...
The bottom line is that I'd always be interested in more classical content, particularly opera, but the way it was delivered would be a major consideration.

Mezzo is one that comes to mind http://www.mezzo.tv/. Appears in oferings in many countries, but not the UK/Ireland where Sky seem to prefer to push Sky Arts, although since they dropped from two to one Sky Arts channel that may also indicate a lack of demand.

OK, many thanks for the additional info. Your additional satellite box is I presume plugged into your motorised dish and not a Sky/freesat box? Are there any existing channels that you feel may be of interest to classical music/opera fans?

Mezzo's quite a good channel yes. Sky seems to have dropped all pretence that they're interested in classical music/performing arts by dropping one of the Arts channels, cramming more and more programming that isn't relevant to Opera/Classical Music fans. It's very hard for independent channels to get anywhere with Sky, hence the plan that I'm working on.
I'm finalising a questionnaire that I'll post a link to here once that's all written. It would be good to have as much information as possible. This seemed like a good place to start.

Mainly 3Sat and Arte on 19.2E, but occasionally one of the regional channels or Servus TV will show either an opera, concert or documentary. There are also operas shown on France 2 (I think it's France 2), sometimes live, sometimes recorded. A trawl through this thread, if you have the time and patience, will show you the main players.
Again, I can't speak for the other contributors to this thread, but what would be of far more interest to me, would be a webpage that had weekly listings of all the FTA opera broadcasts from all the main channels. (I know, I'm dreaming now!) The difficult bit, and why this thread came into being, is noticing when an opera is being shown and where.

Yes the satellite box is connected to the motorised dish. We have a second feed from the same dish to the bedroom, but the motor can only be controlled from the lounge.

Not dedicated channels, but classical music and opera is much more mainstream in some parts of mainland Europe. It's really just a case of keeping an eye on the listings which is why I started this thread, as that is far easier to do in collaboration with others...
I was too late to post about the "Carmen" that's currently on ZDF Kultur - it's an open air one with Kaufmann if anyone wants to catch the rest of it and it had already started when I noticed it.
