Mary cried after her performance and claimed it was a "special song" that she hadn't sung for 15 years. Fair enough, but wouldn't you think the tears would have flowed when she rehearsed it in that case - rather than on live television. Unless, of course, it was done for effect and the sympathy vote.

Apparently they did : she said on the Xtra Factor she and Yvie were in tears when she sang the song at the rehearsal earlier (and she only rehearsed it the once).

Actually- she didn't even get through the rehearsal because she was crying, as was Yvie- she had said all week that she would end up crying over that song

Mary cries all the time- when she's happy or sad

she said it was 'happy tears'- although after being waved goodbye by Simon and Cheryl before the votes are even counted I wouldn't blame her if she'd cried for real

you could say the same about Matt and Cher when they cried during their performances a few weeks ago.

If the song is special to them, then singing that special song to millions of viewers is bound to feel emotional. I don't blame them and bitching about them saying they're doing a sympathy vote is ridiculous.

I think it was genuine. Certainly looked less fake than Cher's 'if I squeeze my eyes tightly and look pained people will think I'm crying!" lark.

The emotion could come because she was live on TV.

Ooooooer a little harsh.

Mary is not some silly girl ,I don't think she would be talked into crying for effect.
She was crying for her dead Mother

I think she did say something on Xtra Factor about her crying during rehearsals, and that Yvie had cried too.

But I have an alternative theory, admittedly a slightly dastardly one. It was a spontaneous cover-up of her embarrassing belch near the end of the song! That appeared set off the tears anyway.

I thought she was crying because it was incredibly off-key, but when nobody mentioned it she decided to go with the 'it's such a special song to me' comment.

If you have a song that is so dear to your heart that you can't sing it without getting all emotional, maybe its best not to sing it at a time like this?

Did nobody think it was a tad crude of Dannii to ask why she was crying? She didn't ask Matt to announce to the nation why the song meant lots to him when he cried did she? And this is coming from a Dannii fan.

Possibly : she was a bit too emotional from the opening bars and her perfomance suffered as a result.

You'd also think she would have long perfected the pronunciation of 'Memories', and not sing Membrees.

Unlike Cher, Mary can't control her fake crying.

Without a shadow of doubt she was crying with embarrassment and disappointment knowing she had blown it.

I just hope it worked and she gets enough votes to take her into the top 3 this week.

Nerves can also double the amount of emotion you feel when singing a song.

Mary's another "I've wanted this for 60 years, this is my last chance, I'll do anything for my dream" contestant who then spends the entire series with a face like a smacked arse, no gratitude, misses her family too much, miserable as sin and doesn't seem to spend enough time practising.

You wonder how these people would cope with making *real* sacrifices for their "dream". Jesus, they're given everything on a plate; a place to live, 24-hour coaching, prime-time TV exposure and all kinds of technology and all they do is whine.

I often wonder if the X-factor really is people's "last chance at fame" (which is pretty sad) or whether these people see it as a short-cut to fame because they're not cut out to put enough real effort into making it big.
