I think it's fair enough when people say they dislike turkey because it can be very dry, because it can indeed. But I'm always puzzled when people claim to dislike it because they say it tastes like chicken.

I think turkey has a distinctive taste separate from chicken. I'm confident I could tell the difference if someone did a blindfold test.

What do y'all think?

I love the flavour of turkey - but it has to be a bit on the dry side, that way you get much more texture which is its main plus point for me.

Neither chicken nor turkey should be moist.

I disagree there - I hate dry turkey and chicken, the dry texture is indeed distinct but it's not a texture I enjoy.

I think they breed 'em differently these days. Last year I got an organic Norfolk Bronze, assuming it wouldn't have had all that fat and water they pump into most turkeys these days.

Cooked it as recommended and the breast was just too fatty and squelchy. No real texture. 'orrible.

Re-cooked in slow cooker and much better - most of the excess fat must have drained out by the end.

I know it is popular and fashionable to like almost liquid meat - but not to my taste at all.

My dislike of it has nothing to do with it being fashionable - texture is very important for me. I just don't enjoy dry chicken/turkey.

To my taste it should almost 'break' when your teeth get into it, not be chewy at all.

Though not be bone dry in any way.

Difficult to describe different textures really.

p.s. talking about the breast meat here, the dark meat is better if more moist.

As an example then diablo, if i were to oven cook a stuffed chicken breast (so no excess fat, and from butchers so not pumped with water!) with cherry tomato and mozerella or something similar, would you rather it was left in the oven an extra 5 mins? That is what could make it too dry for my ideal taste, though i'd still enjoy it

Is it to do with the injected water all supermarkets add that is your issue? I hate that too, and only buy from butchers now.

Don't turkeys get longer to live before the cleaver?
Thus bigger yet old and grizzly.

I think they fatten them up as quickly as possible to get more profit. Maybe that is the difference these days ?

When my parents cooked turkey it was always perfect for my taste - but maybe my preference is because of what I got used to ?

I watched Jamie at Home Christmas Special last night and the Turkey farmer said that intensively farmed Turkeys were killed at 13 weeks whereas his were over double that age and also free range.

A good free range turkey will taste quite different from chicken, but factory farm jobs taste fairly similar.

Not even if I do a special one clogged with fat and water just for you.

If you do one with the natural meat juices still in it I might re-consider. To be clear, I find the cheap stuff injected with water just as bad as you do.

It's very different and a more potent flavour.

Both taste entirely different to me. Turkey tastes even better on the second and third day.

When I ate meat I always preferred turkey to chicken according to my mother, but I do know my Tofurky tastes nothing like it.
