can any other subscribers confirm that their sub copy had a different cover to that of the copies in the shops?

The postcard photo was a full page on my subscription copy and had a half-flap cover on the front.

The copies in the shops is a 3/4 page postcard photo with no front flap.

Well now that 2011 has gone and we've all had time to reflect I think it's fair to say Christmas Night was an absolute shocker.
This is supposed to a 'family' tv evening I understand, so what do we get?
7:00 Doctor Who - not a fan myself but it is something all the family can watch together.
8;00 Strictly - No No No - kids don't like it and men don't like it (3/4 of the viewers ostracised)
9:00 Eastenders - Shame on you BBC - again if you don't like it, tough. But what family wants to sit down on Christmas night to Murder, death by fire and an hour-long screaming match.
10:00 Ab-Fab - watchable but becoming a caricture of itself
10:30 Michael McIntyre - Floppy Hair and Foppish accent does not a funnyman make, no wonder he is so widely resented amongst the comedic fraternity.
I think the line-up gave no consideration at all to family TV - Shame on you BBC - Shame on you

I go along with your general argument, if not some of the detail, but (and I've been pointing this out in threads such as this for a long time now) the problem isn't the choice for Christmas, but the lack of suitable commissions- the lack of commissions generally, such is the lack of spend on frontline entertainment- throughout the year from which Christmas shows can be drawn.

If people are happy to sleepwalk through the rest of the year with evenings made up of the likes of soaps, The One Show, Police, Camera, Action, DIY SOS, an hour of Watchdog, Rip Off Britain, Masterchef etc, rather than pushing for light entertainment, situation comedy and popular returning drama, what can you expect at Christmas ?

well you never know,it may be as good as the original like a lot of things sometimes they do get better than the originals.its not a remake but a further instalment.i remember a few films that have got better as they made further efforts.hope there is a good cover come christmas i think that it is better to have a christmasy picture od artwork than the character covers.

Can you please confirm the source of this information. I saw Ralph Little on something on TV prior to Christmas saying that Cash and Ahern can't be bithered to write anymore Royle Family.

cash and aherne are contractually obliged to produce one more special of The Royle Family. They got off pretty lightly with not doing it for 2011. They could potentially OWE the BBC money by not fulfilling their contract. It has been jokingly revealed by Danny Cohen that "he will stand over them and watch them write the special" for Christmas 2012.

The Abfab News was confirmed on a British comedy website and I will look back on these threads and find the link.

Just why does everyone want so much Royle Family?

It went off years ago. It's not funny, laboured, really rather dull.

It should be rested forever while it still has a shred of dignity left.

Yes, it all looks as drearily the same as ever- there may be some sparks of imagination in the individual programmes, but there certainly isn't any imagination in the planning and commissioning.

Actually, I wonder if the planning and commissioning for Christmas are really done by computer software, in much the same way as the football fixture list is sorted out, only with a lot less difference from year to year ?

I think the BBC are contracted to give ITV studios some more money.

Room On The Broom

A 1 x 30 minute drama for Christmas 2012, made by Magic Light Pictures.

From the makers of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, Room On The Broom is another magical tale about friendship and family from best-selling author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler.

A story about a kind witch who invites a surprising collection of animals to join her on her broom, much to the frustration of her cat. The gang ultimately save the witch from a fearsome dragon, and in gratitude she rewards them with a magnificent new broom which has room for everyone.

I did say I wouldn't be back on this thread till Easter, but can I just offer this post, and the one that it quoted, a big round of applause.

If the rest of the year, on the whole, is dire, how can we expect better at Christmas?
