Made one of these a while back but it's been dragged down and drowned in the whirlpool of music threads and probably past saving now, so let's see if anyone wants to post.

Favourite progressive rock bands, past or present, and why you love or indeed do not love them --- when I say that I mean why you, as a general proggie, don't get into some bands, not that you're a hater of prog rock! Example: I cannot for the life of me get into Spock's Beard (no jokes please!) or IQ, even though I'm a big fan of bands like Marillion, Genesis, Arena, Jadis, Pendragon, Fish, Mostly Autumn and hundreds more, Also never got into Yes or ELP, or Dream Theater.

So, anyone want to share?

I'm an Opeth fan... and not just because Mikael Åkerfeldt grew up in the same neighbourhood as me.

I can't listen to their stuff all the time, because their songs usually have a darker, moodier edge to them than most of the bands on your list, but when that's what I need, they're the first band I turn to in my music collection.

Prog fanatic here.

Focus, Yes, ELP, Wishbone Ash, Caravan, Porcupine Tree, Jethro Tull, Marillion, Genesis etc etc.

Prog is my favourite type of music and has remained so for 40 years now.

Glad to see there's still a few of us out there!
Porcupine Tree are another one I know I should be into, but their music kind of mystifies me, and I still haven't decided whether or not I like them. Opeth I'm turned right off because of my pet hate, death vocals, unfortunately: can't listen to ANY music sung in that way, which is a pity as they are highly rated, but the growls just turn me right off.

Me and an acquaintence of mine at school are the only people in our year that like and probably have ever heard of prog rock.

I like the Moody Blues, Mike Oldfield, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Marillion and Yes.

I love Pink Floyd, Genesis and Electric Light Orchestra (if they count)

I don't mind a couple of Jethro Tull songs, but I can't stand King Crimson *shivers*

I love Yes. I first got hooked when a mate showed me the Yessongs concert on vhs over 20 years ago. Great stuff. Close to the Edge and I've Seen All Good People are phenomenal.

Big prog fan here! My favourite bands include Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd. I am starting to get into the 'classic' prog bands, such as Genesis and King Crimson.

I'm a massive fan of Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes and Marillion (Fish era). I haven't really got into other bands like King Crimson. Tried to get into Gong when I was younger, but couldn't. Don't mind Hawkwind or ELP.

Hawkwind are my favourite band of all time and the only band I've ever been to see more than once (6 times and counting!), but I wouldn't really consider them 'prog', more like standard rock with a different sound to it, with the occasional foray into more experimental twiddlings.

I also like Yes, early Rush, early Genesis. Recently listened to the Gnomon by Sunchild thought that was pretty good.

Big prog rock fan here - Pink Floyd (obviously), Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Caravan and Curved Air rank amongst my favourite bands.

Anyone not aware of it is recommended to check out the Prog Archives: http://www.progarchives.com/

there is also a very lively (if sometimes a bit too serious) forum there.

Love early Genesis and pretty much all of Opeth. There's a great band called Dee Expus if anyone has heard of them?

Quite like Yes and Porcupine Tree, can either take or leave Dream Theater and Marillion.

Prog is a genre I need to delve more into.

Might I suggest Opeth's Damnation album? It is 100% "clean" vocals, so you might appreciate that one.

Pretty much the same as everyone else here... Love Floyd and Gabriel-era Genesis and when I was a teenager Pendragon were my local band so I've known Nick & Pete since @ 1980!!

Of the New(ish!) bands...

Tool (My favourite band)
Opeth
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree
Riverside
Mostly Autunm
Circulus
Touchstone
Panic Room
Katatonia (Their most recent albums are very prog influenced)
Tarja
Oceansize
Big Big Train
Bigelf
The Reasoning
Crimson Sky
Mermaid Kiss
Magenta
Diagonal

There are probably some I've missed - I'll add them when I think of them!

If you get on OK with that one i would also suggest Night Is the New Day by Katatonia. Again there are lots of opeth influencies but 100% "clean" vocals.

Progtastic

The usual suspects for me. I found a new (to me) online station Stellar Attraction which is quite good plus the ever reliable Zenith Classic Rock which plays a decent amount of prog.

copy and paste into winamp or similair
Stellar Attraction http://89.238.146.140:7200
Zenith http://89.238.146.140:7860/

For those of us still sheltering in our hermit hovels, listening to cassette tapes of King Crimson, Genesis or Yes, and who seldom venture out into the real world, know ye that Classic Rock magazine have a special spinoff, Prog, which comes out I think monthly. Free disc and lots of info on, interviews with and reviews of bands both new and old in the prog scene. Worth a look!

Then I suggest you listen to Atom Heart Mother and the studio album of Ummagumma.

Not a big prog fan, can be pretentious and over indulgent at times. Not denying that there are some great songs from the likes of Genesis, Yes, ELP etc. but when you have one song that lasts for half an album, it can become tedious IMO.

Only one band that could be classed as prog for me that has ticked all the boxes is It Bites, mostly remembered for their 80's hit Calling All The Heroes, they did so much more. Not a week goes by when I don't get a fix of the Once Around The World album. For me it's perfect prog, all the elements are there, but without the over indulgence.
