Best christmas bird...
Hey all,
What is you favourite bird to cook for christmas dinner? I am still undecided but i want to do something a bit different, i have put myself up for the cooking this year for a fair few people, which i dont really mind, but would like to do something different! Thanks

Sorry, back on track. We're havign an 8 lb chicken this year. It'll get eaten as opposed to a turkey. |

I think chicken is a good idea, couple of the people who im cooking for said maybe something like a corn fed chicken... I need to remember im the one cooking it! |

I love a big duck, cooked the Jamie Oliver way, with oriental spices rubbed into the skin, cooked in a very hot oven for 20 mins, then turned down low and slow-cooked for about 3-4 hours, after which it is meltingly tender and gawjus!
But this year, as I've gone right off Christmas and I'm effectively on strike (yes old misery-guts I am ), we're going to have a small turkey crown just so I can have turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches every day for a week after.

What about one of those birds which is made up of three different birds one inside the other - sorry can't remember what it's called.

EDIT: my mistake, it's a Turducken. Turkey, Duck and Chicken. And it was Hugh F-W who did the ten bird roast. |

I think they're doing a 3 bird roast in Iceland - didn't look to see what birds they were. Alright if your on a strict budget I suppose. Never know might be nice.

ALDI do one for £9.99. I tried it a couple of years ago but wouldn't bother again and certainly wouldn't have it on Christmas Day. Most of these pre-prepared birds are rubbish whether they're from Iceland or M&S imo. Just for one day it's really worth getting the best fresh bird you can afford and prep it yourself. Also I wouldn't waste my money on a turkey crown as the darker meat has more flavour.

A goose is absolutely the tastiest, nicest thing for Christmas, and it's the traditional English fayre.
Failing that, I think a duck is much better than turkey. |

I'd go for duck, but there isn't really that much on them. Perhaps several of them roasted together on a spit over an open fire like in Robin Hood films. |

We usually have duck but are going for goose this year. Not had it in a good 20 odd years so looking forward to it.
Got a 6lb free range and organic one on order. |
