They sang the Ellie Goulding version which tampers with the melody/structure of the song a bit which I didnt like, and also IMO the end was off key, why did none of the judges pick up on that?

Because they've been told to praise them to the high heavens?

Simon has a hard on for 1 Direction.... and it shows in the judging. 1 Direction's performance was awful, made even worse by comparing it to Ellie Goulding

Did the mentor's pick the first song this week or was it the contestants? If it was the mentors, I find it pretty annoying that Matt, Cher and Rebecca all got somewhat obscure songs, while One Direction were given a song that has a version currently sitting at #2 in the charts.

I really hope they win tonight. The reaction on here will be superb.

I think Ellie Goulding's version is pretty awful, but this was horrendously awful. They were out of time with each other almost all the way through, very few harmonies as usual

Simon is such a terrible liar, I cringe watching him judge 1D.

I could be wrong, but I think the first songs were meant to be their 'winner's songs', if so, I agree with your annoyance that 1D got SUCH a big, well-known song, which is actually popular at the moment, as opposed to the other 3 who got lesser-known (but not obscure by any means) tunes. I do think the latter are better for winner's songs though, something like Your Song which has been everywhere sung by everyone... bleh. (As much as I love the song, especially the Moulin Rouge! version, which also changes the melody a little.)

I didn't like their version either, personally, they WERE off-key at the end and I noticed that they didn't really keep in time with each other near the beginning of the song - words overlapping and getting scrambled. It just sounded messy and horrible. The word that came to mind was cacophonous.
Sorry 1D.

The best version is by Ewan McGregor imo. 1D absolutely killed it, it started off well with Liam singing solo and then the rest came in and it soon turned dire

It's because when you get five 16 year old lads singing songs (most songs), unless the songs are about getting your first girlfriend, your bollocks dropping or crushing on your fit history teacher, they sound meaningless and trite.

It turns into singing by numbers and smiling vacantly, rather than singing with meaning, experience and depth. It's not their fault, exactly... what experience do most 16 year olds have that allow them to sing 'grown up' songs with any kind of deeper connection to the lyrics? It's Simon's fault for trying to foist them on the public and not giving them knock off Bieber songs.

Couldnt Your Song be about their girlfriend or a special person or something though? The lyrics suggest that, IMO.
There have been far better performances of that song even on XF (eg Ben from S3).
I didnt recognise Rebecca's first song either I knew Matt was singing Here with Me by Dido.

I thinking 'singing' your song is a tad optimistic to what they did last night.

I never liked wagner - my post history backs that up - but he was a better vocalist than at least three of them boys, it was attrocious.

Right at the end and especially when they did the last "that you put down in words" part, they sounded awful
I could hear more vocals behind them too.

Because whatever 1D do they are cute, they have jelled as a group, and they have worked hard, they are nice, and they are little pop stars...how dare you think that their singing is relevant?

I thought they were doing a Norman Collier homage at one point.

The problem is they turn every song they sing into generic, kareoke style rubbish. I thought they showed alot of promise at the judges house, but I have not been impressed with anything that they have performed since. I still think that they are going to win the competition though and probably by a more distant margin than people are expecting.

I quite liked it without loving it.

The judges very rarely critisise the contestants in the final, there's no point.

That song is a big song for anyone to sing. My fav film ever is Moulin Rouge and your song Ewan Macgregor's version. But Ewan is an actor not a singer and I am sure he had a lot of help for the film. He wouldn't have been singing it live but with a backing track.

The lads are 16/18yrs old so there is no way they are vocally mature but I can see huge potential and this song was no worse than Matt's very pitchy song.

Oh and this wasn't their winner's song this will be on tonight's performance

Nor has he criticised Matt's or Rebecca's pitchy performances nor Cher's shouty performances

They were well off time throughout the song. I am really hoping that they don't win as they do not deserve it - 5 failed solo singers cobbled together certainly do not have the X Factor.

I can see what Simon is trying to do with them, but they need a lot of work. Really they need to learn to harmonise together and sing as a unit, which can only come through experience and practice. These lads have not been together long enough to achieve that standard.

I think for them to come third would be fair - they could still stay together and work hard to get their act together.
