My Humax Foxsat HDR regularly makes clicking sounds even when not recording. My desktop PC makes the same noise when the hard drive is being accesses and has done for 3 years with no problems.

This is quite annoying as you can hear it even with the TV on. Also no recordings were made from the EPG 2 days ago, schedule was showing the next instance of a series record. There was no live pause or buffer rewind, all other functions were ok channel change menu EPG.
Then this morning the box was frozen on BBC1 with the info bar at the bottom of the screen, and would not respond to the remote or the buttons on the box. I had to power down 3 time and leave it off for 10 minuets now seems ok.

Only had it a week, not a happy bunny

My HDR hard disk makes no noise I can hear and I really have to press ear to box to hear the fan.

I have had two lock ups in the 8 months I have had my HDR - but then again our voltage can be unstable at times (HDR and TV protected against spikes). The SKY HD box it replaced locked up every few weeks.

I think you are rather unfortunate. Take it back and get a replacement. If it fails totally especially during the Christmas high use period you might regret not acting sooner. If in your week of use you have any "precious" non HD recordings it might be worth archiving them to an external drive as an insurance policy. My understanding is you cannot play HD recordings on another HDR.

Ok set a recording this afternoon, it did not happen, and now again no live buffer. Will contact Currys in the morning.

Thanks all

My gut feeling would be that it has a duff hard drive.

A hard drive clicking sound is either a duff drive, or insufficient power to operate the drive correctly. In either case, you have a box that's dead or very near death .....
