I know supose to roast chestnuts
But my mum says they taste nice if you boil them
This made me wonder if you can zap em in microwave
Figured you need to chop them in half first
To stop them exploding
I'm going to get some chestnuts and give it a try
Just wondering whether anyone ever tried to microwave chestnuts before

No, just put a little cross in the middle and stick them in the oven - simple.

I have done chestnut before in the microwave!! Just make a hole in the shell and put then on only for a few seconds. They are actually not bad at all.

Probably test better roast but never actually done that

I like chestnuts and just cant see them getting roasted in our house so I'm going blitz some and see - I will chop them in half clean through the shell first to avoid any explosions )

I think they might be harder to peel if you microwave them rather than roast. I've never tried it though so I don't know.

When you roast them the outer shells and furry inner skins go crispy which makes it a lot easier to peel in one go.

Did it work? I would seriously not cut in half they could get very hard and over cooked that way, just make a cut through the shell with a knife will do.

Cant recall the peeling being to difficult!

This.

We cross them put them in a pan of water, and boil for a few minutes.

Then leave them in the hot water, taking them out 1 at a time to peal. Keeping them warm while peeling makes them easier to peel.

Then you can eat them as they are, stick them in the oven to roast or use them for whatever other recipe you are wanting them for.

They always come out lovely when we do them like this. I never bother roasting them in the shells.

Roasting is definitely best, it only takes 10 minutes more than boiling, so why spoil the ship for a ha'penny worth of tar? I suppose you might want to microwave if you were then going to cook the chestnuts as part of a recipe.

We have a woodburner in the garden, a proper little one. I can take the lid off and putmy wok over it. Chestnuts roasted in no timeat all. It's lovely, we even sit there on our garden bench, peeling and munching.

Another tip (learned while living in France)is to cross them and keep them in the freezer until you want to roast them. Straight from freezer into the wok.

I make some lovely chestnut soup (see my blog)

I don't like chestnuts at all. My Mother always puts them in the sprouts at Christmas for some reason, and I'm left picking them out. This year though, will be different. I've told her in advance that she's using diced bacon this year instead.

I don't really like microwaving things to be honest. Can you describe them to me?
