The Matt dilemma

I think Matt is likely to win the competition, and have done so since the very first two weeks. The reason? Observing my wife. She is 60, so absolutely in the main demographic for Strictly, she has watched every series, and the celebrity she has liked has won every time.

She loves Countryfile, and she loves Matt. Before SCD started she was interested in how he would perform, and nervous that he would not be very good. She has been delighted how good he has been. She is nervous every week when he performs, and worried that the judges will criticise him because she thinks that will affect the votes of the general public. She has no idea this forum exists, or that the resuts come out in spoilers on Saturday.

And now we get to the important point. She loves the intensity he shows in his dances and in his face, precisely the things the judges cticise him for. She thinks it shows real emotion, a real, handsome young man dancing with a pretty young woman, learning as he goes along, but honest in his emotion. She thinks Artem is just a professional dancer, showing the acting of a professional dancer, but Matt is real. She thinks Kara is very good, but has the advantage of having been taught before.

I think my wife is very representative of a big chunk of the voting demographic, which is why I expect Matt's vote to go through the roof after what happened on Friday, and for him to win the whole competition.

I also think that last week's Austin Powers dance will have gone down very well with the pre-teen audience.

So....

If you were Matt and/or Aliona what would you do in these circumstances
- dial back on the facial and dancing intensity, so as to improve the 'purity of the dance', and lose the connection with your audience who love that intensity [after all, who did the BBC posters overwhelmingly vote as the most passionate couple?]
- or keep going for the maximum intensity and athleticism because that is what connnects with your fanbase?

What would you do?

[My own position - I wanted Denise to beat Jill, because I loved her athleticism; Alesha to win because of the absolute joy she showed in dancing; Ricky to beat Chris because he was simply the better dancer. This year I want Matt and Aliona to win because they have dared to be contemporary and give two fingers to the judges, of whom Len just appears to be whoring hiself to the BBC. I adored their AS which had real, honest, emotional depth and loved the fact that it made no references to anything from before this decade. Matt and Aliona are 32 and 26 for goodness sake - they should be dancing something which is relevant to 2010, not a pastiche of something that Fred Asaire and Ginger Rogers might have done. I like the fact that they are taking Len's advice that dancing on the edge is what it is all about, and flinging it back at him - and he doesn't know what to do.]

The Matt Dilemma?

I preferred the one featuring Kelly Rowland.

Exactly!

It's not a dilemma, it's impossible to make assumptions and expect them to be the general opinion.

Maybe you wish to point out to your wife that Matt has also had proffessional ballroom training before SCD.
He was trained by world Latin professional champions Michael Stylianos and Lorna Lee.

Matt actually won his very first Latin competition in 2003 with a Paso and Jive.

Link: Matt Baker's previous dance training...

I agree that Matt and Aliona have danced 'on the edge' and also loved their contemporary AS. I had never heard of Matt before Strictly, but he stood out for me quite early on (as did one or two others). I do feel that the judges are harsher on him than they have been on, say, Scott. Even Kara got 10s last night after stumbling and an illegal lift - Matt would never have gotten away with that!

So, anyway, my point is: I want Matt to win. (And Kara as runner up).

Hello,
That's a lovely opening post

Tell your wife to come round to mine, sounds like we have a lot in common
I think exactly as she thinks.

I would be inclined to suggest they stick to their guns, the red and white New York american smooth was breathtaking, yet the judges didn't get it for some reason.

But its kept them in with the public.
Not sure about Austin Powers, probably my least favourite of the lot, but still worthy for the execution and skill required to pull it ioff, especially since Karen Harding said it was very difficult cheorography

The judges have very little say in the finals apparently, although I'm still trying to figure how just how much.
The bbc website say they have a voting role next weekend, the TV guide says they don't and its all public voting.
I expect they will have a voting role in the 3rd place and the top two is down to the public.

Assuming he gets to the final three of course.

Abba,

Well, we will find out in a week. Have you picked the winner every time? That is why I note my wife's perceptions. She had Stacey Solomon down as the winner of I'm A Celebrity. I think she is very representative of the demographic. I, on the other hand, would be a useless predictor...

I reckon it's going to be the most closely contested final to date - the bookies have Kara & Matt virtually neck and neck.

I think it will boil down to the showdances. I hope Artem doesn't go down the party-dance route with lots of flashy lifts. It's been done to death. I want to see something original. Something truly captivating. And I think he and Kara are capable of it.

My mum's rooted for the second placer every year (Matt, Matt, Rachel, Ricky). She wants Matt to win this year. I don't think one person is really a bellweather.

(Although maybe she just has a thing about men called Matt. My dad should be worried...)

If it helps your point, OP, my housemate has a similar aptitude for thinking the same way as the majority of the public, and she too loves Matt. Thinks he's been undermarked, the judges have been unfairly harsh on him, looked practically ready to hug the tv on Friday night after his salsa etc. As she adored Chris last year and loved Danielle from about week 4 of Over the Rainbow, I'm beginning to trust her reality tv instinct! Also of course this shows how he's probably popular with a fairly broad age range- people of my age (mid-twenties) originally knew him from Blue Peter.

The only thing I've ever seen to successfully predict the winner every year has been the DS poll.

Labasheedy,

I am going for Matt and Aliona, although I would be happy for Kara or Pamela to win. I like their determination not to bow to the judges and to be different, and Matt's great athleticism.

I want M&A to stick to their guns and go for somethig contemporary and intense. I think they, particularly Matt have been on a journey and the last weekend has been particularly tough for him. I think their objective has been for Matt to take the chance of this competition to push himself as far as he can and he has put himself in Aliona's hands. I think in years to come he will regret it it they don't take their philosophy to its logical conclusion in the final. I think they would rather lose than go for something safe and 'lovely'.

I also thinks Aliona has balls of steel. I think she is one tough cookie!

I think Kara is a lovely, and a great dancer, very elegant with beautiful hands. I also think that she is not actually that competitive and would have liked to have a bit more fun along the way. I'm not sure how much actual fun she has had and if she wins, I wonder if she might not also have some regrets that she didn't have more fun. Artem seems much more competitive. I don't think he has much sense of humour, to be honest.

Pamela has shown the greatest love of dancing for dancing's sake. She can be a bit OTT, but she obviously absolutely loves dancing and I have never felt any nervousness when she has danced that it won't at least be neat and correct. I think she shows the problems of age, sometimes she is clunky and stiff because at her age she simply cannot be as quick and flexible as the younger dancers. But her absolute love of dancing - you have to love that. I wouldn't mind James winning either, I like his attitude and the fact that he is open about his competitiveness.

I've lurked and posted here since series 4 and the runaway winner of the poll week after week is the one who goes on to win. But I don't want to say it'll definitely happen this year because I'm afraid of jinxes lol. All I'll say is that it's predicted the winner for the last 4 years

Her popularity is still rising on here... this week she leads the favourites poll again, but has extended her lead up from 43% of voters to 55%. As well as this, several have posted saying if their favourites were to leave they would support Kara.

Makes me smile, even if it means nothing.

I would like Matt to win, but he will only do so if Aliona sticks to her guns. He's cleared his diary for her, is getting as competitive as she is, and I wish them both the very best of luck.

Sad for Kara to be up against such a popular contestant, but IF they are in the final two (I don't think the public vote would allow anybody else to occupy these two positions) then I think it'll all be down to the showdance - like the year with Tom Chambers when Camilla pulled a splendid routine out of the bag.

So, though I would be delighted if Matt were to win, I can also see that Kara could sweep all before her, and that would not make me sad at all. Anybody else - Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrff

It's why I hate this 'demographic' nonsense. The statistics tell me I should be a Matt and Aliona supporter, but I'm not. I've thought Matt was a fine dancer from week one, but Kara caught my imagination with her paso and has wowed me virtually every week since then. I actually loved Matt and Aliona's New York AS (apart from when he ran around her in circles) and totally got the 'striving to make it in NY' thing.

In terms of my favourite winning, I have a 100% record with the Maria, Joseph, Nancy, Dorothy shows , and nearly a 100% record for Dancing On Ice (the Ray Quinn victory was a blip ). I don't watch the X Factor or BGT and rarely watch I'm a Celebrity, so can't claim anything on that. As for Strictly, my record is pretty poor - although, in my defence, I've not cared enough over the last couple of series really to have a favourite. I voted like mad for Alesha, but didn't vote a lot in either of the last two series, because I knew neither of my favourites would win. So I predicted the winner, without necessarily voting for them, if that makes sense.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but my local hairdressers are pretty good at predicting reality show winners. I was there yesterday. Of the eight or so members of staff, we had: one diehard Matt fan, three who admired Pamela but didn't vote, and every other hairdresser was full of praise for Kara, only one of whom would actually vote. So despite the majority wanting Kara to win, the actual votes are equal between Kara and Matt.

Again, that's not a bellweather either, but I suspect that's another part of the equation. We can only vote once on the poll here, but how many of the free votes on DS translate into phone votes on the night, and how many people vote more than once?
