At the moment I'm pleased to say that Matt's odds for Christmas number 1 are shortening (4/9), while his odds of not getting it are drifting (13/8).
Is to be expected though straight after the final.

There seems to be nowhere near the same organisation behind a protest song like there was last year. They just can't decide between the silent track, the bird thing or even the original Biffy song.

They are getting it all wrong though, they are using pointless tracks in their campaign. The reason why RATM won last year was because of the total focus behind that track, plus it grabs your attention on the first listen. No real fan of music is going to be inspired to buy 4 minutes of silence or that cheesy bird song.

I like the single, especially Matt's voice of course, then there's that slightly bluesy guitar accompanying it. Reminds me slightly of Alexandra's Hallelujah, even though apart from the lead guitar the song kind of became a bit hymn-like. Thankfully Matt's song hasn't become so preachy or like a ballad.”

I'm 99% certain you don't need permission to cover a song.

I suspect the hard core music snobs will focus on Biffy - even though as I said on MF endless promotion on R1 when it was out in its own right didnt seem to imprint it on the public imagination. Im sure the Predictables will try that though - like the DJ someone mentioned up thread. Its willy waving for music elitists really... if only one of them would take an original non-herd stance now and again.

I dont know the ins and outs of it but haven't some artists blocked XF from using their songs in the past, so there must be some kind of permission that needs to be sought

RATM Matt mentioned this at the beginning of the show, an seemingly empathised with the whole issue. He entered the machine and whilst inside the machine ha been able to carryout his prime motive and that is to get people to notice these small bands Well done Matt - some live by Mammon alone others know the tutility of trusting in such

He chose the song to bring the band to the fore and he has done a great job because everyone kinows the band now and is listening to their music - clever Matt.

According to musicianswages.com

Once a song has been commercially released by an artist, that artist's song may be re-recorded and released by anyone who chooses to do so. This holds true, provided that the melody/lyric isn't substantially altered in the "cover" version, and that they pay proper fees/royalties directly to the song's copyright holder.

The law might be slightly different regarding performing on television.
