My review of Joe at Nightingales
So I had my work Christmas party on Friday, it was lots of fun, dancing, singing, drinking, rubbish food and chatting. After the party finished we went to a club and the indie section played RATM, well I was not dancing to that one! Anyway it was a really late night and we didn’t get to bed until 5.30am.
I got up early and got ready to come to Birmingham. At Sheffield station my work colleagues went off to get there train and I went in search of a ticket machine to print out my pre-booked tickets. I printed them out and noticed that I had a return train going to Sheffield on Sunday, my first thought was WTF, is trainline.com that stupid, I live in London, before I realized that I had booked a return ticket from Sheffield, duh!
So I got to my platform and my train was delayed, I got my tickets out to see what coach & seat number I was in and realized I didn’t have the ticket, I had the reservation card, but no ticket. I started frantically looking around me to see if it had dropped on the floor but couldn’t’ see it anywhere. As the train was delayed I decided to retrace my footsteps to see if I could see it on the floor, but I couldn’t. I went back to the platform to then hear an announcement that my train had changed platform. It was a bit awkward to find the platform I need, but I did find it eventually and I got on the train hoping that the ticket inspector would be kind to me; I shoved memories of Glam in the City and my £107 ticket from Glasgow aside and hoped for the best. And what do you know, no inspector came on the train and I snuck past the people at the station looking at the tickets by showing my reservation one. RESULT! Maybe it’s karma. One thing is for sure though, me and trains don’t get on, actually no, and me and transport in general do not get on. I should not be allowed out on my own lol.
I met Jenni in the coffee shop and sat down to have something to eat and drink. I had barely eaten for a whole day as the food was so bad at the Xmas party and I felt a bit sick after the mix of drinks of wine, Smirnoff ice, diet coke and orange juice, but the wrap went down nicely. After a while we went off in search of our hotel, Jen was looking at the map on her phone, there wasn’t much point in me bothering to look.
While wondering around and asking people who had no idea where the hotel was we spotted SGG from DS, after being directed to the hotel by someone we walked up the road and found it right in front of us.
We checked in and made our self at home in our very small but nice room. Becca came to our room to meet up with us and we went off to go shopping for Joe’s Christmas present. We met Hgm from DS and twitter just as we got out of the lift, had a quick chat and arranged to meet them for dinner at 7pm.
We had arranged to meet up with Jeanette from twitter at the station and decided to walk through the shopping centre to get there, it appeared to be a shortcut, after going up and down the lift and walking all over Debenhams we found the correct exit near the station and met Jeanette.
After looking in a few shops and buying a lip gloss for £8 in Boots, we went to HMV to get a copy of SWMU for Joe to sign. There were only a few copies left so I didn’t get one for myself, hopefully that means quite a few copies had been purchased.
Then we went to River Island to find a top for Joe. Me and Jenni found a top we both liked, it’s a blue/grey colored top/jumper similar to some of the stuff he has worn recently. I picked up some tissue paper and pretty bows to wrap the presents up in Clintons. We then decided to go back to the hotel, that sounds like a quick shop but we were hanging around browsing for a while.
We got back to the hotel and got a drink from the bar; we met Haze and SGG there and stopped for a chinwag before going to get ready.
We arranged to meet at 7pm to get something to eat and by the time we stopped chatting we only had about 45 mins to get ready.
In that time I had to wrap up the presents and write my Xmas card to Joe. I am not the best wrapper, in fact mum would tell you that I am rubbish, it’s best to do it yourself then have me help tbh. I even needed help to stick the bows on haha. I then write the card, mid conversation and I realized I had wrote, Merry Christmas and a Happy Birthday, as I had no tippex and couldn’t cross it out, I ended up writing OMG lol I meant happy new year, that is what lack of sleep does for you. I hope Joe can laugh at that. Jenni then mentioned it in her message and said, ignore my adoptive daughter Hayley, she doesn’t know if it’s Christmas or your birthday haha.
We got dressed and headed back down to the bar to meet the others and find somewhere to eat.
The hotel was in China town and we were going to have Chinese, then we spotted an Italian and went in there. Michelle and Tascha (DS) met us in there. The food was nice, but quite expensive for the rather small portions.
Not too long after 9pm we made our way to Nightingales, we found it quite easily. Me, Jen, Becca and Jeanette headed to the stage while the others went up to the lounge. Joanne and currentmrss also Joanne, so in other words the two Joanne’s was already there, as was Rochelle and a few other people. We stood at the front of the stage. I was happy to see there was a proper stage unlike Revenge. The music was really good I thought and I was having a lil boggie.
It took a long time to get packed, well in fact it started to fill up about 40 minutes before Joe came on, I was starting to worry Joe would be performing to a half full audience. Jenni was dragged off to dance with a young gay guy, she kept trying to explain she couldn’t dance but he wasn’t having any of it, he was swinging her all over the shop and kissing her. I found it hilariously funny and couldn’t stop laughing.
I was getting more and more squashed and by the time Joe was about to come on I couldn’t move and hand something hard digging in my leg, it was some wood I noticed afterwards, (oh that could sound rude if taken as an innuendo I promise it was a piece of wood sticking out from the stage lol). But I have never been so happy to be squashed an unable to move.
Just before Joe came on the host came on the stage, he seemed to be genuinely buzzing about Joe, how good the sound check was etc. There was a competition for the best dancer and a girl could Kerry-Ann won, part of her prize was to meet Joe after the show.
The host said Alan Carr was in Birmingham and had come down to the club, (I guess to see Joe), the host introduced Joe and the VT shown before Joe’s XF performance played, it made me feel a little emotional seeing back little clips of his XF performances.
Joe bops on stage and sang Feel The Fire, DSB, The Climb, Until The Stars Run Out, Someone Wake Me Up and Ambitions, can’t remember the order. Joe was brilliant, he has really improved in terms of interaction with the audience, me and everyone I spoke to agreed he has progressed in that respect, going to so many gigs you can see Joe progress and improve on certain elements on his performance and it’s great to watch that development, he seems to have so much more confidence now and such a presence on stage, anyone who says he doesn’t have any charisma or stage presence really needs to see Joe perform live now. The crowd was loving it and he got a fantastic reception.
The crowd was loving it and he got a fantastic reception. I have said it a thousand times about Joe’s performances, but he did sing incredible and work the crowd. I just love the way he sings the album tracks live, the way he changes bits in the song and the way he sings certain words, he isn’t afraid to change up bits of the songs and experiment and if he had a live band on stage and was performing night after night on a tour or something I think you could go to several shows and see Joe try something a bit different.
We were so close to the stage, close enough to touch; Joe was going up and touching people’s hands and people were trying to stroke his legs and things. Perhaps if I hadn’t met Joe before I would have reached out for a sneakily touch of his leg, but now I would just think that Joe was thinking, why the f*ck is Hayley touching my leg and feel a bit cringe doing it. One guy starting reaching for the groin/package area, I spotted it and was like ooooooooh, Joe carried I singing, laughed and walked to the other side of the stage.
After UTSRO Joe said, oh my shoes are undone, let me just do them up, there are too many cameras here for me to fall over, then started laughing lol. Bless him.
After Ambitions Joe said Merry Christmas and goodbye and went off stage. The host came back on and said wasn’t he brilliant etc etc, I was putting my phone away when he said, who wants more of Joe and I was thinking whaaaaaaaaat is Joe going to a competition or something. Then Joe comes back on stage and Real Late Starter came on, I was like ooooh an encore, whoop! I was rushing to get my phone back out and on too video. I loved hearing a new song live, I really love the way he sang it, it’s a fast worded song and has some high bits so not really easy to sing although it sounded fab too me.
The crowd really got into it; it went down really really well. I think someone, somewhere must have given feedback to Joe or the team regarding doing an encore, I don’t think it is a necessity at a club, more so a concert, but maybe this is how it’s going to be from now on, an encore and extra song, brilliant!
After the performance we got out of the crowd and went round to where the meet and greet was, or so we thought, after hanging around for a bit and seeing Alan Carr appear, Haze came round and told us we were standing in the wrong place, round the corner was the queue for the meet and greet. Everyone was going in groups of 4’s and luckily enough there was 8 of us. I went through with Jen, Becca and Jeanette. Waiting outside of the room, the host started chatting to us, he said how lovely Joe is and that his sound check was fantastic earlier, he started talking about that beautiful pure voice so enthuasticly I could tell he was a genuine fan of Joe’s talent. He then mentioned the dancers and said they were lovely, I replied, oh I know we see them all the time. The two guy dancers then went by and he stopped them, I said to them that we have seen them loads before, the host asked, oh where and me and Jen were like everywhere haha. So then the host was like, ooooh you’re the big huge fans of Joe that follow him everywhere, we laughed and said, that’s us, there’s a few more of us in there as well.
Then it was our turn to go into see Joe. Jen went up to him, Joe said, hiya, you alright and Jen replied, Joe you are killing me, then Joe said, I saw you in the front row, you are not made for these clubs are you, cheek replied Jenni LOL! A while ago Joe would have said, oww sorry to Jen, but now he understands her humor now we think.
Joe asked again if we enjoyed his performance on Alan Titchmarsh, so he obviously recognized us from there.
Jen mentioned we had a present, he said Oww that’s good. Jenni said Alan Carr was there and it was her dream to see Joe on his show, Joe laughed and said ahh maybe one day, I will have a chat with Alan now, just organize your life for you said Jen haha.
Then I went up to Joe and gave him the present, those that don’t know aside from the top was a toy sausage dog, Slinky from Toy Story as a joke. I said hello and sat down and gave him the present and explained one was a joke present and the other a serious one. We weren’t allowed to take our own photos with Joe as it was taking too long, but a guy was there to take a professional photo with you and Joe. I got a signed card from Joe; unfortunately it’s a picture of The Climb.
Becca and Jeanette then went up to Joe, not sure what was said there, I was in a daze lol.
As we were leaving the room Joe said, I will see you next weekend, we said, yes in Dublin, and then Jen said, we are looking into Belfast now. We were expecting Joe to say, Belfast as well :0 or something, but instead he said, yes you may as well come to Belfast, you will be in Ireland anyway, and it’s only a 2 hour drive, so come to Belfast. Me and Jen said, we will look into it, Joe said, oh good, I will see you there then next weekend. He knows full well we will be there in Dublin and Belfast now, can’t turn him down now he has told us to come along lol.
After coming out of the meet and greet room, Jen asked if I had taken the price tag off the jumper, my face dropped as I realized I hadn’t. Stupid me.
We then left the club and went back to our hotel. Jeanette was getting a cab home and Becca went back to her own room. The rest of us went to Haze and SGG’s room and they cracked open the wine, me and Jen stuck to our J2O’s, I am not a big wine fan and couldn’t really face drinking after the night before. Tascha showed me how to put video’s straight on my YouTube on my iphone and I screamed each time a video processed, I just can’t believe it’s that easy and quick on my phone, after spending so much time trying to upload my video’s at home when I have just got home and am tired, I thought it was a bleeding miracle. From now on you can expect my video’s to be on my YouTube page a few hours after the performance.
We were all chatting about Joe, suddenly realized it was nearly 5.00am and thought we better go to bed, so after some more chat we went off to our own rooms at about 5.30am. Me and Jen got ready for bed and still continued to talk while in bed despite both of us being silly tired and to the point of slurring when we finally said, right we just need to shut up and get some sleep. That was probably around 6am, or maybe later.
The alarm went off at 9am for us to get ready for breakfast and I looked an absolute state, I had suitcases under my eyes, I had left my make up bag at home so had to use some of Jen’s to make me look a bit less tired and half decent.
We met the others for breakfast, although the breakfast was pretty dire, the scrambled egg was grey, there were about 5 beans left that were cold and the bread was hard. There wasn’t even knives and forks, deffo wouldn’t’ have been worth the money. We all carried on our chats about Joe over breakfast and ended up still being there chatting at 11.45am and the checkout time was 12pm. So we rushed upstairs packed our bags and was off on our way.
I forgot to mention actually, but my new bag which I bought in Paris broke while at Nightingales, so I went to the shopping centre Bullring to buy a new bag and also a bag small enough to get on a Ryanair flight as hand luggage.
Me and Jen had a browse around the shops and I bought a [eggs], then we stopped in Burger King for some tastier food then breakfast, I think we must have been in there for over an hour talking about guess what? ……….. Joe again.
Unfortunately I couldn’t find a small suitcase/bag without a huge price tag, so I will have to do that another time.
Before we knew it it was about 4pm and we headed back to the hotel to pick up our bags and get a taxi.
We were both falling asleep in the cab to the station; we bought our tickets and went off to the platform.
I had to wait about 20 minutes for the train and was so happy to just chuck my bags down and close my eyes, knackered.com doesn’t even come close, I had about 6 hours sleep in 2 days and didn’t sleep much the day before that.
I was so happy to get home, and wanted to go to bed, but I stayed up just to watch Joe on Xtra Factor, and then went to sleep. I am surprised I didn’t fall to sleep at work today, must still be running on adrenaline.
In conclusion, it was a fab weekend. Brilliant company as usual and the amazing Joe. Saw him perform right in front of us and had a quick chat with him afterwards, what more could we want?
I am excited for next weekend in Ireland now to see if he does RLS again and I have never been to Ireland so it should be good.
The End!
