I thought you might like to see the latest offering the French market has announced today for new ADSL subscribes.
It is another event which will start discussion on by which method TV and other services will get to the consumer.
The ISP is known for innovation and only offers television to those who's lines are unbundled and will support at least SD TV.
The new boxes are composed of two units and include gaming functionally.

I am sure the specs will interest Bob_Cat [They are in French but the French can be skipped as the icons and English words are most understandable - Specs at the end are just specs - universal.]
See what you think: freebox Innovation.

The new boxes are composed of two units...
Looks like a client/server system. I've been hoping for such a thing for only about 4 years! Was scared Sky would get in there first and try to lock people in, as Pace seemed to have a multi-room system on offer. But it never happened. As yet anyway...

It's not just about IPTV, getting broadcasts over the internet etc as not everyone has such speeds (although who knows what's going toahppen after 2015...), but it just seems so logical and common sense to have one server in the house with central services on it and multiple tuners, which all TVs/devices can access.

This of course is what a HTPC would be, but who really wants to muck around with Windows and other Media Center type applications and configuring things. We just want a box that can boot up in a few seconds straight into TV viewing (without having to select it from a series of menus...) just like a TV would operate. The TV would get allocated the next available tuner from the server. Recordings can be set from any TV and played back from any TV. Any service can be accessed from any TV.

I guess the server would need two tuners for recording purposes, plus however many additional independent tuners you feel you might need for your house, and plug in additional ones as you require.

The set top box at the TV would be a thin-client and automatically boot into TV mode, but you can download and use other services such as games that are stored on the server.

It doesn't need a hugely powerful machine (as server) to do this, but I have been quite disappointed with Humax's HDR which, although a reliable machine and does what it says on the tin, is only just able to manage basic functionality without grinding to a halt. It's grossly underpowered for even basic PVR stuff. If you've got two recordings on the go, it takes around 10-15 seconds for the box to respond to any cursor movement.
