Do Neighbours and Home & Away give C5 an identity?
I thought I'd start this thread because I think without Neighbours or Home and Away, C5 would pretty much be dead in the water. The only other good show it would have to its name is the CSI franchise, but do you think it's important, as the fifth of the terrestrial channels, for it to have soaps as part of its schedule to give it an identity? In a way, both Neighbours and Home and Away are the flagship shows of Channel 5, and I personally think the station would be lost without them.
With all the constant negativity surrounding the future of Neighbours in Australia, do you think Channel 5 would take over sole production if it were ever cancelled in Oz? After all, it gives the broadcaster a very decent share, and extremely good ratings. It is the channel's highest rating show, perhaps after CSI. What do you think? |

The Hotel Inpector is a very popular show, one of the channel's most popular. So is the Gadget Show. There is also Milkshake which is the only early morning kids TV shows on terrestrial TV these days with all the most popular current kids cartoons. There are loads of others but I'm not going to sit here and list them!
![]() If your question is "Would Neighbours and H&A be a big loss to the channel?" then yes. But if your question is "Would the channel be without an identity or unable to survive without them?" then definately not. ... especially regarding Neighbours. It survived without for well over a decade without Neighbours and it is a relatively new show to the channel, so I don't see it as the basis for the channel's identity!!!

I would say they are both flagship shows for Five.
Five more than covers Neighbours production budget on its own, plus its broadcast in 30-40 other countries around the World - its quite big in the Middle East now. |

Thanks for your post Summer Ste, it is interesting to read. As a viewer of the Hotel Inspector, you are completely right, that is another show that serves the channel well.
I think the point I'm trying to make is that, because it's a soap, that airs every week day for the majority of the year, and attracts very good ratings, then is it different to other shows in that the channel would fight hard to keep it on air if Oz did give it the chop? I mean, soaps are a huge thing for a channel, constant and reliable performers, and is it really essential for the show to be on in Oz for Channel Five to keep it as one of its leading shows? |

Thanks for your post Cent. How do you know it is big in the Middle East right now, may I ask? Whereabouts specifically?

Five should take Neighbours over yes. At the moment, it is trying to be all things to all people...and it can't go on. Neighbours needs to grow up and five are the people to engineer it...because the Australians are no longer interested in it. |
