2008
04/01 - 6.76m (27.7%) [Sun] --> vs Swarm (Nature Documentary)
05/01 - 7.34m (28.8%) [Mon] --> vs Traffic Cops

2009
04/01 - 6.74m (25.6%) [Mon] --> vs Hustle
05/01 - 6.52m (24.1%) [Tue] --> vs Traffic Cops
06/01 - 6.85m (25.2%) [Wed] --> vs New Tricks (R)

The opposition this year is larger, in the past 2 years its only faced one drama which is actually new.
Thanks for that.

correction: How Do They Do It? got 1.02m

apologies
LOL, bizarre that HDTDI topped the night on C5. Pretty good rating for that show I have to say. I thought the CSI: NY repeats might do better as they are normally well above 1m in the 10pm slot. Never mind - the new series arrives on Saturday.

Interesting set of ratings so far. Stargazing not as high as I was expecting but still doing great things and comfortably ahead of C4, where Famous & Fearless continued to drop. Meanwhile Silent Witness actually managed to increase viewers for its second episode which is a feat for a two-parter. I guess some watched the two parts back-to-back last night.

here's what I got...

EE - 10.68m
Holby - 6.38m
SW - 6.34m
Gosh, that's good!

The latest ITV1 travelogue didn't do badly really at 8pm considering how well HC and SL did on BBC1/2.

(I think ITV is developing a real niche in celebrity travel shows, outnumbering the reality formats I reckon. The modern day successor to Wish You Were Here? I suppose. And cheap too)

A great rating for Silent Witness and it looks like Monday/Tuesday dramas will continue for a few weeks with Waking The Dead returning afterwards.

Super ratings for BBC1 yesterday. The EastEnders' rating is one of its best since Anniversary Week and share-wise I can't remember it getting as high as 42.9% (apart from Xmas Day) in months. Excellent for Silent Witness too to increase its audience - I suppose with a much stronger lead-in it wasn't going to fall much, plus add in the fact Above Suspicion dropped so many viewers, some of them might've wanted to see Silent Witness which in turn helped boost SW.

Pretty poor for AS by its own standards. ITV dramas usually do drop that much on Tuesdays compared to the night before but as D.M.N. posted, Above Suspicion has normally been much more stable than that in the past. Not a good sign for Taggart next week which I can only see rating much lower than that. Not too good for Secret Meditteranean because it's been plugged quite a lot and since it's the first of four episodes, the later episodes could be in the sub-3m category.

F&F got Tuesday 04 January 2011 | Channel 4 | 20:00 | 1.61 million viewers
thats with +1.

C4 can face its own reality its time to move away from these type of shows and maybe just go for Comedy/dramas.

they had the daddy of all RT shows and they axed it.

David Walliams got 1.48 million viewers (+1 inc)

It really is terrible. I mean, "I'm A Celebrity" is "famous" people being almost genuinely fearless AND has the whole Big Brother element to it too. F&F takes away the Big Brother element, takes away the adrenaline, takes away the comedy and stretches the microscopic bit of substance left over almost 2 hours a night of boredom.

EDIT: It almost makes me appreciate Ant & Dec too.

On the subject of +1 channels and the BBC.

ITV will do what they can to maximise ratings and so does the BBC, often moving programmes from BBC2 to BBC1 for solely that reason.

One thing the BBC can also do is promote their programmes to a degree that commercial channels cannot hope to match. Cinema advertising, sides of buses, posters, magazines and any other area that comes to mind. The TV Licence allows this, commercial channels have to make a profit and can't spend too much on promotion.

As we know promotion is the number one tool for initial high ratings for any programme. Once there is awareness of a programme (due to promotion) that also influences the ratings it will later achieve.

So why is it "cheating" when ITV do it and perfectly fine when the BBC do it?

C4 might put a brave face on it but when you think this time last year CBB was getting 2.9-3.3 million thats a hell of a drop.

Good to see C4 Sales have begun reporting programme ratings for the UKTV channels as well. (since they now handle their ad sales)

QI XL did really well on Dave last night with 561,000 at 10pm. (probably includes +1)

So with HD, Stargazing LIVE was only 170k behind ITV1. It could beat ITV1 tonight as they're showing a repeat of The Unforgettable... which tanked in its first airing. Impressive rating for Motorway Cops which beat all the other terrestrial channels added together. Also Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents on BBC3 rated very well - not only with the first showing getting almost a million but the 2nd airing rated strongly too.

Sky Atlantic had it's press launch this morning where they confirmed the opening schedule and also announced further programming acquisitions from CBS(Blue Bloods) and Showtime(The Borgias).

First big homegrown drama will come in August with Paul Abbott's Hit and Miss. The only other homegrown commissions announced so far are David Attenborough's penguin documentary and new comedy This Is Jinsy.

Still no clear confirmation if the channel will be made available to Virgin Media subscribers but it seems increasingly unlikely, at least at launch. Sky have said on Twitter that they have no deal in place with Virgin at the moment.

Another interesting thing to note is that Sky Atlantic programmes will preview on Sky Anytime and Anytime Plus seven days before airing on Atlantic itself.

I wonder if this signals a move out of primetime? I think it was a new episode. A very good rating at that time of day, to say it was on for an hour too.

Very good rating for Holby City last night. That's the 3rd week in a row it has hit 6.3m or higher. I think it will continue a run of strong ratings over the coming weeks with Silent Witness and then Waking the Dead running afterwards. Also very strong rating and share for Eastenders - 42.9% share is exceptional for a regular episode.

Not too good for Above Suspicion it has fallen a long way on Monday night.

Does anybody know how The Chase, Deal or No Deal and Eggheads fared yesterday? Given it was the first day back into the normal daytime routine.

I don't have any ratings, but someone on the Broadcasting forum who seems to be in the know suggested that it hadn't done great.

FIVER really struggles without Home and Away. I really hope C5 sorts out the digital channels this year because they're underachieving as they are.

Brilliant ratings for EastEnders last night
The writing and Acting was outstanding and deserves as high ratings as possible.

I think had Monday not fallen on Bank Holiday then Mondays episode could have rated higher then it did,

Not surprised Emmerdale was lower then on Monday which i did state Yestetday but good rating anyway

Holby did well with no doubt gaining due to EastEnders high rating

Merging Five USA and Fiver to create a bolstered Five Digital channel sort of makes sense. The only issue from Five's perspective is that at the moment those two channels get about a 1.4% market share (Five USA- 0.9%, Fiver- 0.5%). Would one channel with the best of Five USA and Fiver be able to get 1.4% or close? And what what they show in their other EPG slot?

Hmm, in the context of FIVER if it's around the 100k mark that's probably acceptable. (I don't think they have any 200k + shows apart from the soaps.) Hopefully it will get a chance to increase once viewers start to notice it's there.

Brilliant night for BBC One. The EastEnders-Holby combination is so strong at the moment, and both did excellent numbers last night. As a result, I suppose its not a surprise to see Silent Witness improve slightly on yesterday too.

What I wasn't banking on, though, was the exodus of viewers from Above Suspicion. The majority of ITV's crime thrillers have been so consistent over the past few years, so that one comes slightly out of the blue.

Very good once more for Stargazing Live. C4 have had their big new arena competition format beaten 2:1 by a comedian and a professor staring at a cloudy sky.

I think it would get close to that 1.4% mark and possibly overtake E4 (exc. +1). C5+1 would be an obvious candidate for the other slot since everyone else is doing it.
