Also anything for the 6pm Cowboy Builders repeat? Better than what Studio Five normally gets at 6.25pm?”

Yesterday:

17:00- Five News: 692k (4.5%)
17:30- Monkey Life: 434k (2.5%)
18:00- Cowboy Builders: 613k (2.7%)

Cowboy Builders had 757k (3.3%) in LFSF's 6.25-7pm slot, which is about double what LFSF gets I think.

It kills two birds with one stone: they can compete should ITV air any big thrillers on a Monday, and it also solves an under-performing drama slot on Tuesdays.

In the midst of 'ITV Flopzone', we don't often recognise how much BBC drama has suffered on Tuesdays in the past two years as well, despite the Holby lead-in. Check out this list of dramas - all of them range from moderate to complete flop:

The Deep
Luther
Survivors
Paradox
All the Small Things
Mistresses

They have at least solved that problem for the next 10 weeks.

And it all leaves ITV in a very difficult spot. They'd ideally like not to compete with the BBC big guns on Mondays and Tuesdays, but also have no space on Sunday, too much disruption on Wednesday, and like to stick to entertainment on Friday. That basically leaves them with one spot, Thursdays where Kidnap and Ransom will air.”

I think ITV should just stick with tried and tested. Above Suspciion proved on Monday that thrillers can hold their own up against big guns on BBC1. Yes, Tuesday's would flop horribly but there's nothing new there (I won't go down the 'why the hell don't they move the soaps?' route again).

I thought Above Suspicion would perform better than that to be honest. Not very good at all, especially considering the lead in did better than I thought it would. BBC1 had an excellent night and, as said, they have sorted out their Tuesday night issue for a few weeks.

H&A was doing about 900k and LFSF 300k before the Xmas break = which averages out at about 600k over the hour. Looks like Cowboy Builders performed very similar for a repeat.

Five News at 5pm did okay but Monkey Life rated poorly in the Neighbours slot.

George Dixon is really going to town now - he's broadcasting two shows at the same time.

Still think Five should replace Studio Five and maybe the 7pm News with factual as it would boost their audience share. Would be interesting how HDTDT would do at 8pm given that it broke a million. Only Highland Emergency has done a million before in that slot.

Apart from the stuff rzt has picked up on, one other thing I noticed in the DigiGuide update:

Kara Tointon's Don't Call Me Stupid - a fascinating documentary about her dyslexia which premiered last year on BBC Three to an audience of just under 900k, gets a run on BBC One on Tuesday 18th January at 10:35pm.

Thanks. Guess then both the 5pm News and Monkey Life need Neighbours to support them. The news rating isn't too bad (especially if you round it to 0.7 ) but its lost around 200k viewers compared to normal. Share seems a bit lower than normal too. Monkey Life I suppose doesn't matter that much as it's just filler for the soaps, and will probably be repeated a few times.

I think the Cowboy Builders rating certainly proves that factual could do better in the 6.25-7.30pm 'problem' slot, but I don't think Five currently have a strong enough range of programmes they could repeat in that slot all year round (New commissions would be risky). So what to do for the rest of the time? Is there a suitable American comedy import Five could try out?

While it would probably do fine at 8pm, I think Five are best leaving it at 7.30pm to boost a struggling slot. Also worth noting that was up against Eastenders last night, whereas Highland Emergency has done well on Wednesdays with weak opposition. Add in the lack of a strong 8pm lead out, and HDTDT did very well indeed

The obvious candidate is going to Comedy Central in October. They missed the boat on that one.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pro...l#mon_episodes - 7 episodes

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x7fjr - 6 episodes

any Daybreak ratings, or have I missed them?

Found them, back up to normal, not a great share.

Just noticed on BARB that Avatar had 696,000 (+1: 179,000) on Sky Movies Premiere on Christmas Eve. Excellent rating. That one is going to be huge when it arrives on terrestrial, do we know where it is likely to go?

A massive night for BBC1. That EE is huge and up on the 10.4m it has on Monday night. Holby is doing very well recently as well. SW increases too, but that's a dreadful rating for AS. It held up OK last year didn't it? Did it have a better lead in or worse competition?

Also does anyone know the Emmerdale rating inc. HD?

I think the Above Suspicion rating just proves how much it and other shows rely on the second Corrie as a lead-in on Mondays.

I'd say the same for any channel that's launching a +1 service, not just because it's ITV (I've always said +1 should be lumped in with C4). ITV and C4 will certainly include them as +1 channels will show exactly the same ads so the number of viewers advertisers pay for will include +1.

At a push perhaps +1 shouldn't be included when comparing with other channels in the same slot (but it's a grey area) but I certainly think it should be included when looking at things such as series averages and % viewing shares.”

Absolutely agree. And really the debate is a non-starter anyway as most places publish the figure anyway.

And nowadays too the vast majority of channels have a +1 anyway. It's only the BBC and Sky who don't.

(Talking of +1, has ITV4+1 been able to show The Ashes highlights considering it would run into Sky's live coverage?)

Although personally I'd have held back 10 episodes to air in the usually weak autumn, by beginning with a 5-parter they've basically split it into a mini-series with a 17-part series to follow.

Shameless is a survivor though and despite some people never getting over the loss of Fiona and Steve, it's been stronger in the series since they left. It's still hit and miss - since the increase to 16 episodes in S5 I think only series 6 really got away with it - but that said a "miss" episode of Shameless is still often the best thing on TV all week.

Yeah I thought the 22-episode stretch seemed abit much, but i'm just catching up on the last series on 4od before it begins next Monday and if i'm honest they're are hardly any duff episodes at all. Granted some are better than others, but it's generally a superb show and one of the highlights of my TV week! Roll on Monday!

DS reports 8.37m (35.2%) inc HD, which was the tape-checked average between 19:00-19:25.

The problem is ITV have no cement in the schedule compared to BBC1. With EastEnders and Holby City BBC1 have a strong backbone to boost the 9pm offering, but save Emmerdale ITV have nothing to pull in viewers.

Channel 4 has the output deal with 20th Century Fox but Avatar could be sold separtely in the same way Indiana Jones, Bond and Harry Potter. Titanic was pretty big on terrestrial and still well despite its length.

Mamma Mia! should do well as will The Dark Knight, we did see a few 2008 films appear at the end of 2010 so some films from 2009 could appear at the end of this year like Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation. Twilight should do well although I have no idea who owns the rights.

Shameless should continue until Paul Abbott and David Threfall decide to call it a day, it's unlikely to be axed by Channel 4 given that it's their longest running drama series,

One of the rare occasions - like The Pacific - where Sky actually promoted a specific timeslot, rather than the usual 'next week', 'from Friday' and 'now showing'.

Also, the evening showing was the first, as it didn't have the usual 10am showing, which usually makes the BARB top tens.

Wonder if the one-off 3d simulcast is included?
