Fantastic for Strictly - I predicted 12.9m and 13.2m on the RPG so it performed completely in line with my expectations (although annoyingly I was 0.1m out on both!), so a brilliant pair of ratings top off an incredible year for it. BBC1 also dd really well around it, especially with Wipeout, Impressions and the News, although I have to agree that Casualty underperformed a bit, and it's a shadow of it's former self.

As for ITV, the less said about Bridget Jones the better. Family Film of The Decade did OK for the filler it was, whilst I don't think The Cube did that badly. 3.8m is low but it was against SCD for the whole show and there was no X Factor around to boost it. I suspect it'll be back at ~5m for the New Year special. Comparing it to Wipeout last week isn't really fair as that had a Strictly lead-in. TMO did pretty well considering what it was surrounded by and the night BBC1 had. I suspect it took a bit of the shine off Casualty's rating and it bodes well for it to get 5m+ in the New Year with less competition and with a stronger lead-in. MPD did pretty well considering it ran until 11:25pm.

Last night was BBC1's night and tonight will be too, and as it's Christmas fortnight, I think some predictions are in order:

Sports Personality: 6.7m (pk 9.1m)
The Apprentice (2hrs): 8.3m (pk 9.8m)

Harry Potter: 4.3m (pk 4.8m)
Suchet: 3.8m (pk 4.1m)

Great ratings for Strictly, its highest ratings ever. So The X Factor is the highest rated show of the year with EastEnders 2nd, Corrie third and Strictly 4th I believe. When people were sounding the death knell for Saturday night TV and terrestrial TV in general we have seen some massive numbers over the last few years. Make the shows and the viewers will come.

The main evening news got a massive rating but Casualty's is piss poor. Casualty needs a break and a refresh. This programme used to own Saturday nights for years and could be doing better but it's just on too often.

Casualty is poor, it lost about 50% of its lead in and lead out. I'm surprised it didn't get close to 10m.

Strictly was obviously boosted by the snow but it is still way down on what The X Factor got.Remember a few years ago these shows were neck and neck.

Stunning figure for Strictly. It has done so well this year. BBC1 had a brilliant night. Casualty, the Lottery and BBC News all did fantastically!

Pretty bad night for ITV, but Take Me Out did the best, which I'm glad about. That figure will rise to around 5m next week. The last 10 mins of the show clashed with the Strictly final.

Sorry, but didn't Take Me Out lose over 50% last weekend I seem to remember?

And between Casualty and Strictly was the Lottery, which although scheduled from 20:00 to 20:15 was only on from 20:03 to 20:11 because their 'guest' wasn't there because of the snow.

Not surprised with The Cube but how many actually recorded it at 7pm and watched it at 8pm when Lottery/Casualty was on?
I don't know, but they would have been included in the overnight figures I believe if they did that.

Strictly was obviously boosted by the snow
But dented by the fact some transmitters went down last night due to the weather. I don't believe TXF suffered from that fate.

The snow stuff was just ramping by ITVistas yesterday so they could pretend SCD underperformed when it got less than 15m, as it was always going to do.

Those people would have been included in the overnights.

Just properly noticed the BBC News figure SCD lead in + Snow = Massive ratings.

Fantastic rating for Strictly. To outrate the final of Britains Got Talent in officials would be absolutely amazing for it and really cements just how far it has bounced back this year. Interesting that the two shows are virtually stable, and the peak for the night came in the first one. I suppose last night was the first time all series they had a Saturday night results show. A 10pm winner announcement probably missed that, er, certain demographic if its audience that was already in bed trying to beat the cold.

I have to agree that ITV really didn't do so well, considering what Total Wipeout managed last week. I suppose ITV didn't enjoy the benefit of an anchor at the beginning of the night, mind you.

In other news, MPD bounced back quite significantly the day it moved back to 10pm - I hope the C4 schedulers noticed. The show isn't dead, but needs some real care when they next put it out. This run has been botched quite badly in scheduling terms.

I do get the feeling Ch4 were using this week as a test to see how it could do at 8, especially with such a poor Autumn/Winter run of programming so far, i'm pretty sure we will never see MPD at 8pm again

Yes when did The X Factor turn into a phenomenon? And Casualty I think is the biggest disappointment for BBC1 for the night.

Saturday 18th December Overnights
BBC One (inc. HD)
19:00- Strictly Come Dancing: 12.97m (45.8%)
* peak: 14.47m (50.7%) at 19:55
21:05- Strictly Come Dancing: 13.08m (47.6%)
* peak: 14.10m (51.7%) at 21:55
* most watched SCD episode ever
* up 2.7m (+26%) vs. last year's final

Thanks to MattJ for the ratings
Massive ratings for Strictly last night, very pleased to see it set a new series high and I think it is very much deserved after the improvement seen this year. I hope it can continue these ratings next year and maybe even build on them.

20:15- Casualty: 6.76m (25.2%)
Very good figures for Casualty last night. That is the show's highest overnight ratings in nearly 2 years since February 7th 2009 when it got 6.79m. Although it would have been better to have had Casualty before the Lottery show in my opinion and then Casualty would have been even higher.

22:05- BBC News: 9.43m (38.4%)
Wow, huge news ratings!

Oh, here we go.

Overpredictions Central!

If people are housebound tonight, why does everyone assume they'll be tuning in to BBC1 by default? When we had the big snow day in 2009, wasn't it ITV that got the biggest lift (Coro St, Whitechapel etc)?

If SCD gets past 14m tonight, let alone to 15m, I will eat my hat!
Lol OK looks like your hat is safe to live another day.
Even though my prediction was out, I still think it was a brilliant rating.

Here's an interesting stat. The very first The X Factor final was watched by 9.7 million and was beaten by Strictly. The show has come a long way!

Good for SCD last night and even i tuned in to see who won given the Hype and everyone seemed to be talking about it

Nearly 7million For Casualty is brilliant and 8million for the Lottery is just

Not surprised at the BBC News though given the weather.

So I guess the most watched shows of 2010 go like this

1.The X Factor
2.EastEnders LIVE
3.SCD Final
4.Corrie
5.BGT

?

Coronation Street will be 3rd as its official rating was confirmed yesterday of 14.75m - Strictly will need to timeshift 1.6m to match that.

EDIT: Corrie's live episode probably only timeshifted 0.7m because it was repeated on ITV1 at 22:35 don't forget, that showing bringing 2m.

Oh right maybe not then.
Of course Dr who and some of the other X mas shows could make the top 5 but i doubt it

Mentioning Casualty, I think the BSI have shot themselves in the foot once again - the next episode is not on Boxing Day as you might expect, but instead on Bank Holiday Monday at 7.10 opposite Emmerdale and Corrie So that last night's high rating will probably be cancelled out by another circa 4m rating.

I'm speechless. Given that God was on Robbie's side (both the Cowell God for clearing the schedule on ITV and the weather god), that's really not that impressive. I suppose Robbie can take consolation that its way up on last year when a stand in sports reporter won, but really that was the lowest ebb and its was either up or the axe after that.

I thought that BBC1 were doing some sort of "big weekend" thing, but it seems the audience for the news almost beat the dancing thingy. Maybe the BBC should consider doing the dancing on ice next year?

As has been said, for Casualty to lose 50% of the lead in is woeful.

PS. Does anyone know how One Man & His Dog performed last night (ratings wise )

Yeah thats true
Id have gone for Boxing Day right after EastEnders at 9:00pm or Move EastEnders back half hour and then fit Casualty in at 8:30pm and then Upstairs Downstairs in at 9:20pm

People must have switched off in huge numbers during the Lottery draws - no wonder. The guest didn't show up and Jenni Falconer and Alan Dedicoat had to fill 15 minutes talking about the snow.

SCD making fantastic ratings last night.

13million is a new high for them.

I think this series has been the best yet.

According to the Radio Times, it's set on Christmas Eve too. So presumably it was intended to air on Friday, presumably where My Family is (it has aired on Christmas Eve after EE and opposite Coro in the past).

Let's face it though - the entire festive schedule this year is riddled with BSI bewilderment, George Dixon obviously pursuing a scorched earth policy before his departure.

If you think 6.76m from an 8.24m lead-in is a 50% loss, then you need to ask Santa for a new calculator, George...

They could have also put it out on Thursday at 9pm instead of the New Tricks repeat they've got in that slot. I know Casualty is 50 minutes long, but they could have easily padded it out to fill an hour-long slot with a 'Previously on Casualty' bit as has been done in the past.
