Not shown that well on the 15-minute breakdowns, but ITV1 including HD it seems was neck-and-neck with BBC1 in the 7pm hour. The last 15/20 minutes somewhat inflates SPOTY's average.

The whole hour or just 7-7.30?

BARB did not report the official match average ratings for the ITV1 England matches. For the BBC1 matches, the match averages (inc. HD) were:

England vs. Germany: 17.45
Slovenia vs. England: 12.51

Series 2 (2005) Average: 8.7m
Series 3 (2006) Average: 8.3m
Series 4 (2007) Average: 8.6m
Series 5 (2008) Average: 10.5m
Series 6 (2009) Average: 13.0m
Series 7 (2010) Average: 14.1m

Simply stunning final rating and series average, which I doubt anyone would have predicted earlier in the year, particularly after BGT dropped from 2009. I can't see it matching these ratings next year as it must have reached its ceiling now, but I'm sure it'll remain a huge hit for a number of years to come.”

Very strong average for series 7 - it's almost double the average for series 1! I know we say it every year, but I agree that I think it's hit its ceiling now. The year-on-year growth was smaller than previous years which suggests that its reached/almost reached its potential audience. If it can limit its decline to less than 10% next series and stay around the 13m mark, I'm sure ITV will be pleased.

ITV did very well last night considering its schedule consisted of an old movie repeat and a trailer for a forthcoming drama. To be running the BBC SPOTTY/ Dick marathon close is quite incredible.

Looking at that Top 20 of the year - according to the BARB lists, this is the first year since 2000 where there's been 6 different (non-sport) programmes breaking the 13m barrier. That really is quite remarkable.

Think we'll have a lot of high daytime ratings today considering the weather. Coronation Street and probably EastEnders will be above 10m, the former will probably be above 11m to carry the momentum from last week.

Bodes well for Come Rain Come Shine against Panorama and Accused.

Fantastic rating for SPOTY. 7.1m is its highest average in years and that peak is phenomenal. A combination of extra viewers tuning in for the result, Apprentice viewers tuning in, the overrun and Harry Potter ending at 20:55 all contributed to that huge peak (look at the jump at 20:55 as HP ended!). The Apprentice rated superbly: considering how it's been harmed by ITV's 2 hour dramas/football/IAC in a way that it hasn't before, for it to end up only 0.3m down on last year for the main event (21:05-22:05) is superb. You're Hired rated brilliantly too, 7.1m at that time is very rare. 6.3m for Countryfile at 6pm is also pretty special.

ITV held up really well it has to be said. Harry Potter rated really well, 5.8m is actually 0.1m higher than what it got first time round. The lower than expected rating for the premier probably helped it last night as people will have missed it in April. It was scheduled beautifully to capture those who were only interested in the SPOTY result and not the build-up as it ended just in time, and it ended early enough for families with children and was in a similar slot in which C4 and C5 have enjoyed big audiences for family movies. For it to hit a 6.6m peak at 20:45 as SPOTY was nearing its climax is excellent and will have been a nice surprise for ITV this morning. Suchet also rated pretty well, and may end up higher than the episode of Poirot it was a spin-off of! A nice bit of alternative scheduling paid off nicely for ITV last night.

Yes, shame on ITV sticking out a moth-eaten old movie that premiered in cinemas as long ago as July 2007....

I suspect the Orient Express travelogue will have appealed to a group who won't be the slightest bit interested in sitting through 2 turgid hours of Poirot on Christmas Night.

On the evidence of the overnights, it may well outrate the show it is supposed to be promoting.

Millionaire really revived Tarrant's TV career. Apart from perhaps Tarrant on TV , there was very little of any note for him, television-wise, for the preceding fifteen years, although his radio career went from strength to strength in that time.

As you say, he probably hasn't always chosen wisely in his TV choices. After success as part of ITV's Tiswas, he got involved with an adult version, which basically consisted of pouring gunge over topless women's breasts. A choice which left his TV career in the doldrums for about fifteen years.

I think he deserved Millionaire on the basis he never gave up, and always plugged away to get back to the top.

Anybody heard anything about the possibility of More4HD? (just a question, not a rumour)

Pleasing to see such a strong reaction to the news, but I guess More4 have made their minds up and won't reverse the decision. I'd imagine they have only kept the Global Edition to try and minimise any backlash from fans. Does anyone know how the last regular episode performed on Friday?

I think it was a silly move having the Apprentice last night. I love the show and forgot the finale was on last night until someone I know mentioned it about 10 minutes before on Facebook!

Luckily, then, I saw it live, but otherwise I'd have been expecting Wednesday.

Good figures, but it would have been so much better airing this Wednesday.

And also excepting Man-o-Man, one of the most quality bits of trash TV (yes, that's possible!) ever seen in this country.

A travesty that they axed it. I'm not sure ITV has come up with a better Saturday night LE format since then...

I thought TMO was the 21st century version of Man-o-Man

You mean you've forgotten the other Chris Tarrant Saturday night hit called The Colour of Money already? (I jest)

The BBC News Special will probably just be a cheapo simulcast of the News Channel like last time, rather than a public service factual piece.

I do think we can overstate the snow effect sometimes. It doesn't seem to have lifted anything too noticeably over the weekend, and a large proportion of the country is already off for Christmas. Even if mild and clement, would they be going out anyway on a Monday night before Christmas?

But if there is, ITV is sure to be the beneficiary tonight!

I remember (I'll try and find it in a sec), there was a BBC News Special earlier in the year, and some of us were like 'this should get 8m', so of course some were surprised when the overnight was half of that.

(edit - actually a News Special on 6th January had 5.9m, 22.3%)

Here in Gloucester we are almost over the footstep on the doors and gritters and things just can't get through and it's still chucking down with snow
so i guess they will do local area's News specials aswell?

I dunno alot of people are still working

yes. The cold is killing off the BBC audience rather than increasing it
