It's procedure, we'll be adding +1 to ITV1 when that launches - it wouldn't just be Channel 4.
Don't you think - having +1 is likely to decrease the original broadcast? Also seeing as you mentioned ITV1+1, how will you report those ratings? Will you mention the +1 ratings in addition to the main ITV1SD/HD rating or combine them or not mention +1 at all? Thanks in advance

Don't you think - having +1 is likely to decrease the original broadcast? All I ask is for is a level playing field. If all of the big three had a +1, then I would not object. But until such a time, it is questionable practice to automatically bundle the +1s in. |

Strange night in some respects. EastEnders and Upstairs Downstairs did well on BBC1, but poor for Celebrity Mastermind and Casualty. BBC2 did well though until 9pm.
ITV1's ratings are bizarre. They're tape-checked, so in my view they're low. Considering ~28m were watching TV, the ratings are low in my view as are the shares. I think Sky Sports 1 must have took a chunk of the audience away from terrestrial, but for some reason DS haven't reported it. Because some of the terrestrial shares are low. SS1 must have beaten Five in primetime, presumably DS have chosen to ignore a sports rating again... quelle surprise. |

In some cases yes, but I also believe +1s bring in new viewers that wouldn't otherwise watch. And in a commercial landscape where only two of the big three have a +1, it makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever in the interest of fair analysis to compare channels with +1s to a channel without a +1. Unless we add FIVER's share to C5 since that is essentially a +24 and must be decreasing the original broadcast?

LOL, which is a very rare thing to happen but is anyone surprised? They ran a repeat of a countdown show first shown three nights ago! The Hippo doc was also a repeat from a few months ago. C5 didn't even turn up last night, so where they came in the rankings is neither here nor there I'm afraid. Very predictable that this would become a headline though - when Channel 5 finishes third it rarely gets a mention.
As for Film4 performing so well - I have no idea why Die Hard 4.0 was such a popular choice with viewers. It was shown on C4 as recently as early October. Very lazy and uninspiring scheduling. Could they not hold back one or two premieres for Film4 every now and again instead of premiering absolutely everything on C4 first? And as for the diabolical BBC Three, well it got lucky with that programme about Annoying People which somehow posts a good result each year and gives them something to repeat endlessly for the next 2 weeks. The ironic thing about the programme is the talking heads are often more annoying than the subjects... Most Annoying People has been running annually for a fair few years now, and is popular with its' target audience, so why would they stop it? Five schedule was abysmal, so no one watched, it's as simple as that. |

Paul Millar - do you have the rating for yesterday's Ashes Highlights on ITV4 at 10pm?

828k (3.3%) - and it entirely depends on whether Attentional separates or combines the figures - if it combines them, it would probably make sense to combine Channel 4's with +1 too to be consistent.

Thanks. I imagine it had a peak of ~2.5m/3m, which would have dented terrestrial.

Paul Millar - if you have time, could you please post the ratings for yesterday's afternoon movies: The Incredibles (BBC1), March of the Penguins & Happy Feet (ITV1). Cheers.
I suspect Incredibles might've won 2:1? |

Poor of the BBC to show a virtual repeat of Countryfile on Box Day. It was just old segments pasted together. Next week is just the same - highlights jammed together.

DS don't automatically bundle the +1 ratings in though. They mention the +1 rating separately, and for the primetime shares say C4: 5.0% (+1: 0.7%) so it's clear what the share was for the main C4 channel and what the share was for the +1 channel. I don't see the problem with that at all.

What are you talking about? DH4 was successful because it's a decent, popular action film, not a Steven Segal flop.
Most Annoying People has been running annually for a fair few years now, and is popular with its' target audience, so why would they stop it? Five schedule was abysmal, so no one watched, it's as simple as that. As for your Steven Seagal dig, C5 have been the home of many decent popular action films over the years and premieres as well. Indeed, C5's top 20 most watched programmes of all-time includes several: # Programme Date Time Audience 1 Euro 2000 Qualifier: England v Poland Wed 8 September 1999 1900 5,630,000 2 World Cup Qualifier: Albania v England Wed 28 March 2001 1900 5,590,000 3 Independence Day Tue 7 September 1999 2100 5,410,000 4 The Rock Tue 8 February 2000 2100 5,050,000 5 Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines Sun 14 November 2004 2100 4,950,000 6 Miracle on 34th Street Sun 7 December 2003 1755 4,850,000 7 UEFA Cup 2002/3: Celtic v Liverpool Thu 13 March 2003 1945 4,610,000 8 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Tue 17 March 2009 2100 4,550,000 9 Joey Sun 13 February 2005 2035 4,530,000 10 Euro 2000 Qualifier: Luxemburg v England Wed 14 October 1998 1900 4,380,000 11 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Sun 24 July 2005 1810 4,320,000 12 Erin Brockovich Mon 10 March 2003 2100 4,260,000 13 Gladiator Sun 19 October 2003 2100 4,260,000 14 FlashForward Mon 5 October 2009 2100 4,250,000 15 CSI: Miami Tue 30 June 2009 2100 4,220,000 16 The Mentalist Thu 26 March 2009 2100 4,210,000 17 Terminator 2 Sun 27 July 2003 2100 4,160,000 18 The Da Vinci Code Sun 10 May 2009 2000 4,090,000 19 Ransom Mon 10 April 2000 2100 4,040,000 20 Armageddon (Part 2) Tue 19 March 2002 2200 4,010,000 |

Paul seems to be suggesting that could change depending on whether Attentional combine or not, which would be a mistake in my view. But anyway, I don't have too much problem with the above, but it is not correct for them to put C5 behind C4 when the former had a 5.1% share and the latter a 5.0% share, just because the latter had another 0.5% on +1. Sometimes they get the order correct, sometimes they don't.
It's a procedure that I'm instructed to do - but at the same time, I completely agree with Score's earlier post. |
