I see where you're coming from, but I do disagree. C4 and ITV will of course include them as they want to make their figures look more attractive to advertisers. It will be interesting to see exactly what happens when ITV1+1 launches and see if figures generally go down or up or what. I suspect they will be ever so slightly up with +1 as it enables people that otherwise wouldn't have watched to watch an hour later. Figures will be low for the first few months though - the new service will take a while to bed in and will probably rate worse than C4+1 to begin with.

Nobody will even remember Daybreak in 30 years time, let alone wish to see it again.

I wouldnt trust Desmonds word. so far he has said one thing and did something different. As far as five is concerned the proof will be in the schedules. This is Desmonds first Christmas and its looking very cheap.

Are you sure? I have Thomas & Friends down as 123k to Daybreak's 325k (exc. HD) over the same period (7.30-7.45am).
Obviously that's still poor for Daybreak but I don't think it was beaten by Thomas & Friends.

Five USA should've been scrapped ages ago, creating Five and Fiver - sticking mostly to imports, football and action movies and shock docs (only things capable of 2m+)

You're right - sh*t - think I was referring to Channel 5's 8.30am figure (an hour out by a mistake there - not done for big sensational tabloidy reasons
) - mentioning so many ratings in one morning is starting affect me, Sorry.
I notice the tram effect seems to be wearing off for Coronation St and audiences are down by over a million again. However, Emmerdale seems to be gaining momentum and seems to have added 1.5 million viewers over the past year. I reckon Emmerdale could average out at 7.5 million this year, with its Weatherfield rival holding out at around 9 million.

My problem with five's Christmas schedule is that it confuses the brand. With five, its always going to be a niche player, regardless of what the Express/ Star say. Now they seem to be throwing in random shows into the schedule, presumably on the basis that the rights were cheap, regardless of whether it fits with fives brand.
I liked five as an alternative to BBC/ ITV/ Ch4 when they had nothing good on. You knew the next CSI show wasnt far away or failing that there would a similar crime procedural there.
Now FFS on the 30th you are going to see a 30 year old Terry & June. And its not the one where June finally snaps and impales Terry on the garden shearers either........

But they are not the only things capable of 2m+! Cowboy Builders, Ice Road Truckers and House Doctor have all broken the 2m mark in recent years. Minder had 2.9m for its premiere suggesting drama on 5 could be successful if done right, unfortunately it wasn't very well made and its audience collapsed thereafter. Greatest Embarrassing TV Moments had nearly 3m a few years ago. The fantastic Extraordinary People series has cracked 3m on a few occasions. This year a 90 minute documentary World's Most Extreme Airports topped 2m. So it's more than capable of finding hits outside the genres you outline.
Going back to Christmas, I think ITV1 might have hit on a formula that while it knows it can never rival BBC One, unless Eastenders and Doctor Who stiff, is providing an alternative. Poirot was the ideal tonic for those who find Jim Royle vile and Little Britain too much and their two soaps are ratings bankers. I think this is the direction ITV will follow for next Christmas, serious drama versus the BBC's comedy and the soaps. After all, Emmerdale narrowed the gap with Doctor Who, though it has to be said people who like Emmerdale generally don't like DW and vice versa.

A new low, George, slating C5 for its kids output. I know ITV have disgraced themselves by turning their backs on childrens TV completely in the past few years, but you shouldn't discredit other broadcasters for actually serving the younger audience that ITV will only cater for on a little watched digital channel. Milkshake is an excellent strand as you know and I'm delighted that Desmond has pledged to continue supporting it.

Consolidated rating for The Apprentice semi final was 8.77m and for the final it was 8.63m, according to a reliable source.
The timeshift for the final was only 0.3m which is bizarrely low. From a ratings perspective, the BBC should've split the final into two when they submitted their logs to BARB. Like last year, the final ended up with a lower "official" rating than the semi-final.

It won't necessarily always be a niche player, particularly if C5 concentrates on securing some top sporting rights as seems to be the goal (if you'll excuse the pun). I think if they can successfully bolster the sports output it will have a knock on effect on everything else as it will bring so many more viewers over to C5 and I think they'll like a lot of the other programming the channel has to offer as well.
This "random" scheduling you speak of is a couple of nights of nostalgia driven programming over the holiday period. It really is insignificant in the broader sense, but the way some are talking you'd think C5 was to reposition itself as a mainstream rival to GOLD in the new year.

Channel 5 during the daytime and mid evening has a good mix of programmes, from Milkshake in the morning, Wright Stuff, soaps, afternoon film, Monkey Life repeat, Studio 5 and then endless CSI repeats. It's not that bad of a channel that some make it out to be.

Well said guys. The channel is improving all the time and as I said the sporting rights are going to be key. Does Desmond have enough spending power to push for those big contracts? Champions League would be immense if he could pull it off. But something like the FA Cup as well could provide a boost.
I watch Channel 5 far more than ITV1. And the new year schedule is looking strong with brand new NCIS, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, Cowboy Builders, Emergency Bikers, Eddie Stobart and Ice Road Truckers. Each and every one of them excellent programmes. Plus in daytime The Wright Stuff is being extended by 15 minutes, Vanessa Feltz' new show follows at 11am and Matt Barbet becomes the main presenter of Five News at 5pm. All positive changes, I think it could be a great start to the year for the channel.
The 6:30pm-8:00pm period and underperformance of Home and Away are ongoing issues though.

Exactly.
No one when the overnight ratings come out look at the 9am ratings, or the 1pm ratings... we look at the evening and night-time ratings. Because that's when primetime is.
The sad thing for Casualty is that it has lost any momentum that it gained on SCD night through that scheduling. Its quite strange as in the past there have been big set piece stories over Christmas and tie ups with Holby.This time its practically filler against the soaps having an awkward start time and getting significantly fewer viewers than One Show and Nativity in that slot. Not the most encouraging treatment to me.
