I was looking throught he BARB website at the newly published top 30s and this stood out. Blackburn V Sunderland the top rated multichannel programme. Wow!

Man Utd v Arsenal makes much more sense.

Whilst it was down a fair amount year-on-year, I was expecting it to be down by a bigger margin considering the schedule. It could have been a lot worse, indeed several DSRPG predictors went below 2m! I think it's testament to the show's unwavering popularity that it held up so well in spite of everything.

Hopefully the 2011 edition will get a peachy late December slot with a sensible start time so it can reach its full ratings potential.

Downton launched in ITV's traditionally strong period of Sunday night in the autumn. (Frost, Heartbeat, London's Burning etc etc etc.) (Doc Martin also). An even stronger period these days with X Factor in the mix.

Also original Upstairs finished 35 years ago. Most of its audience from then will be dead now.

Mastermind moved to take on Corrie and let the food programmes continue running as a double bill. This was just the BBC burning off the last episode of both before the new season gets under way.

Mastermind seems to have been hit hard by Stargazing Live. I imagine there would have been a fair bit of audience overlap between the two shows.

Channel 4 is unlikely to go after Brian Cox but it's always annoyed me they pleaded poverty while signing up talent from other channels. Mary Portas should do well on Channel 4, Jimmy Doherty I'm not so sure but I imagine they'll try and pair him with Jamie Oliver.

Moneysupermarket seems an odd fit for BGT whereas TalkTalk and Nokia kind of made sense with the voting aspect of The X Factor.

Does anyone know how "The Chase" did last night?

The problem for ITV is that their primetime times go:

Saturday - 19:00 to 21:15 --> 2 hours 15 minutes
Sunday - 18:30 to 22:45 --> 4 hours 15 minutes

Extremely lopsided.

I'd have changed the Dancing on Ice schedule for the first weekend so its split into 3 shows, ie.

Extra 15 minutes for shows 1 and 2 to allow for extra hand waving, if absolutely necessary (which it isn't).

Plus that actually looks like a thought out, logical schedule. Something neither ITV or BBC can seemingly achieve at the moment.

Oh, I've also (which I didn't realise) extend Adrian Chiles' show by 15 minutes. Sure he wouldn't mind... besides I think 30 minutes is too short for a talk show, cramming way too much in too little time.

Interesting that they went for Pepsi even though Coke offered more money. Coca Cola didn’t pay that much for Idol when it started and so benefitted from large ratings without paying top dollar, I imagine it’ll still sponsor Idol though.

Coca Cola and Pepsi have always tried to attract big names to promote their brand, in the 80s, Coke sponsored Paula Abdul while Pepsi sponsored Michael Jackson, Britney appeared in Pepsi ads while Christina appears in Coke ads. Even the Spice Girls appeared in a Pepsi ad.

Not back until the 16th according to reports - surely they'd have recorded 2 or 3 sets by then. If they do I hope it's not Louis for all of them - he was awful last year.

Held up quite well, though a Bank Holiday boosted it I suspect. Notice though the evening repeat has been dropped from More4 now (in favour of Come Dine with Me!) - I doubt it was still the case but in the early days Deal was often More4's most watched show most days.


Just looks so much better in the listings.


In context that would surely be C4's best prime-time performance in some time. Famous and Fearless didn't completely crumble versus the soaps, and Big Fat Quiz didn't suffer too hugely in a stupid slot.

Will be interesting to see how Shameless does next week and whether it gets boosted by not having the E4 First Look episodes.

You're actually knocking 45 minutes off per DoI show as I believe only half the couples are skating in the first two shows (as has been the case in recent years) - though why they need two hours for eight I don't know. Even The X Factor gets that into less than 90 minutes!

With the splitting idea I would launch as you suggest with two performance shows, possibly with a skate-off at the end of each - or at the end of Sunday's featuring the bottom placed act from each night.

Even with HD, Above Suspicion was probably behind Silent Witness in all adult demographics apart from 45-54s. Not sure why in contrast to every other adult age range, more 45-54s watched AS to SW!?

Nah, there was some people on here that suggested it should move to Sunday's a couple of days ago. I think they're probably right - If its going to increase the ratings then move it! But is it not possible it was maybe just due to the holidays?

I think Emmerdale will be lower in tonights rating.
The snow/Bank Holiday could have helped the rating.

EastEnders 9 times out of 10 lose Bank Holiday Mondays ratings so to see corrie ahead is nothing of a surprise.

Waking The Dead series 9 DVD is out on March 14th 2011. That suggests the new series is going to start airing in February. I wouldn't be surprised to see it take over the Silent Witness slots once that finishes.

Also new BBC1 dramas, South Riding and Silk, have their DVDs out on February 14th and March 21st 2011. So it's likely South Riding will take the Sunday 9pm slot after Zen finishes and I wouldn't be surprised to see Silk on Sundays at 9pm once South Riding is over.

Note, the DVD release dates are subject to change so they might been shown at a completely different time of the year, but at the moment the above seems likely.

Speaking of Waking The Dead, Trevor Eve says that his production company is developing a Waking The Dead spin-off focussing on the Dr. Lockhart character. But after his recent comments about the BBC, (yet another attack of the corporation by him), I'm not sure the BBC will even be interested in going ahead with this proposed spin-off.

Does it make much difference on Mondays and Fridays? Surely 99.99% of EmFm's audience stay tuned for a dose of Corrie? How many ITV soap fans watch EmFm but then switch over to, say, Inside Out when Coro comes on?



Hm, this shows how inaccurate a picture we get when people post Ch4 incl +1 ratings.

3.1m and 13% share looked decently respectable, 2.67m looks less good. But it's the 2.67m one that's correct.

I do hope we are not going to find ITV1+1 ratings being automatically incorporated into ITV1's ratings by the original reporting sources or posters on here who put them up.

It is going to cause a right old rumpus if they do....

Normally, when the large lists are posted on Tuesdays and Thursdays the number includes +1, but the percentage share excludes +1, so it is possible to work out the audience excluding +1 if there's a show on in the exact same slot.

What does Trevor Eve have against Doctor Who and Top Gear? He's even appeared on Top Gear so why is he moaning about it.

Problem is that some sources include them and some don't. Although as I've pointed out before, under the VOSDAL rule overnights include people who recorded a programme and watched it back by 2am, so surely a +1 channel is just another form of same day timeshifting and therefore should be included. I'd say the same for any channel that's launching a +1 service, not just because it's ITV (I've always said +1 should be lumped in with C4). ITV and C4 will certainly include them as +1 channels will show exactly the same ads so the number of viewers advertisers pay for will include +1.

At a push perhaps +1 shouldn't be included when comparing with other channels in the same slot (but it's a grey area) but I certainly think it should be included when looking at things such as series averages and % viewing shares.

I asked a few days back i think but didn't get an answer. Does anyone have Sky News Sunrise ratings for the Christmas period. It would be good to see how far off the 300,000 mark they were yesterday compared to Daybreak.

Stand-out ratings for me are above.

For W&G to get 5.4m on what I think was its fifth showing (on BBC1 anyway) in just 2 years is sensational - beating quite a few first run peaktime Christmas offerings!

And it didn't even win its slot with those numbers - the 6.3m news figure for ITV is quite remarkable, given the exceptional BBC news figures, and obviously carried through into giving EmFm an unexpected boost. How's about that - EmFm getting a ratings boost from the ITV News!

But note the low darts figure, and Jimmy's Farm underperformed for the slot too - it seems viewers who weren't enthused by those options decided to watch Emmerdollyoaks instead, giving it a surprising lift.

The BBC news hour rated incredibly well - although it has been at around the 6-7m mark all holidays I think.

Portillo's highly regarded train journeys series returned very strongly - especially with BBC1 and ITV1 rating so highly at the same time. Bodes well for its nightly run over the next 5 weeks.

And "wows" for the Stargazing and Lakes ratings. The Lakes really does benefit from the non-EE watching Corrie viewers - keeps them staying put pretty well. It's harmless fluff viewing, but pleasantly watchable. It would be good to see how it performed away from EE, but I suspect it's the Corrie sandwich which gets it the 4m+ figures - it would, oddly, rate less I think if it moved away from Mon 8pm into a "less competitive" slot.

And finally, that is a surprise to see AS and SW neck and neck, SW a nose in front. How did ITV manage to lose that, with an 11m Coro lead in?

No figures for an entire individual episode of Sunrise but the top 10 Sky News programmes on Barb gives some idea of Sunrise figures. It's the most watched Sky News slot with 340,000 the highest average audience over a half hour period. Over the whole 3/4 hours I imagine it's significantly behind Daybreak.
