Humax Foxsat PVR - very slow boot
Our Foxsat PVR is two years old. Sometimes when it's switched from standby to on for the first time that day, its boot up is extremely slow.
The LCD screen "comes alive" (although it stays blank) and the blue light comes on. But sometimes it then takes as long 4 or 5 minutes before the screen displays the word "BOOT". After that it behaves normally. It's never actually failed to start up. And the above behaviour is intermittent. I have a slight suspicion that this may be related to cold weather. It's never done it during the summer - only in winter. Does anyone else experience this? Do you know whether there's a cure? |

When you say cold how cold? Mine is in an unheated conservatory and if it gets lower than 7 degrees it fails to boot, however I've never left it as long as you have so it may display the same characteristic if I had.
I of late have been leaving it on without any ill effects, the epg updates no problem, the only issue I have with it is the thumbnail generation during its housekeeping. I've also tried pre heating the box with one of those beer fermenting heaters the mat type not the submersible or belt type with a time switch. But this wasn't any good for recordings that were scheduled in the early hours of the morning. Oh and welcome to the forum!!

Oh and welcome to the forum!! The answer to your question is - not as cold as yours! The unit is in our sitting room which, during the recent cold weather, has probably got down to perhaps 6 or 7 degC* when the heating isn't on. *That's a bit of a guess - but certainly nowhere near 0 degC. |

Has the box been power-cycled at all in those two years? If not could be symptomatic of memory leak / corruption.

If so, then the answer is yes - but perhaps not for several months. Could that be the reason? If you'd be kind enough to confirm that I have correctly understood, then I'll try that. |

Yes that is right. Sorry, should have been more explicit.

OK, it's now been two days since I tried switching off at the mains and switching back on again.
Success! The unit has booted up normally every time we've used it! Thanks very much for your solution, gomezz. I shall remember it for the future. And thanks to everyone for your thoughts and responses. |

I thought it might be useful if I leave a quick update, since it's now a couple of weeks since I applied gomezz's solution.
The box has behaved perfectly - booted up normally every time. Many thanks again, gomezz. |
