I have never got the impression that she "put on" the accent, she might be able to suppress it if needed but it is not uncommon for people to do that in normal life.
Lots of people move to another part of the country and never lose their accent.
The only one I always feel increased her accent for effect is Cilla Black but perhaps she was also deliberately suppressing it when she started - someone originally from Liverpool was interviewed on the radio a few months ago and said they never remember hearing there the strong Scouse that is common now on TV.
