I've lived on four council estates since 1973 and get heartily sick of the assumption that we are all flat capped, beer swilling lefties or poor buggers who couldnt afford a posh house.
My parents had to relocate to one as my father had to leave the fire brigade due to ill health, we had been given a free flat on the fire stations due to his officer status. So they chose to rent. Since then I have lived around London on estates and I have never ever come across any trouble and I have always had good, hard working neighbours.
In 1979 my then husband was eligible for a flat as he had lived in the borough all his life, we were able to live and work in central london and chose to rent, not to save for a mortage. Well little did I know that eventually this would label me and my family by the media and various others as scum and workshy people. I apologise for letting the property values plumet because I live next door to a posh residential street as apparently I was told once.
I'm also fed up of these political labels, Apparently all tories are rich, souless idiots and all left wing people are lovely altruistic saints, its ridiculous left and right wing have their degrees of extremity and it is also possible to have some conservative opinions but some left wing leanings too.
I am now living in a housing association flat in central london and some people aer still amazed that there is social housing right next to parliament! Oh and I live in social housing and have a posh accent! How did that happen!
