Tall Paul slipped up and forgot.

So here goes: a poll open for 5 days only: nominate your greatest dancer of all time from the list.

I'm also going with Salome. She certainly rather more than a 10 from her judge.

Although like Monaogg I'm wondering what happened to Fred Astaire (and Gene Kelly) although pleased to see Fiona making an appearance.

Rather guiltily I feel I should have voted for Nureyev. (Nijinsky being a bit before my time!)

Does that mean 10 paddle for Fred,
minus 10 for Ginger?

So sorry, voters. Infected with BBC'itis, I have forgotten to clarify the rules.

At midnight on Christmas Day this Round 1 poll will close, and the lowest-polling 12 dancers will sadly be leaving the competition. Those coming back will join the 12 dancers listed below, in the Final Round, with voting starting again from scratch, continuing for 6 days. Feel free to ramp your candidate with a posting.

The Grand Final will take place at midnight on New Years Eve. As Big Ben chimes the poll will close to cheers, possibly to a standing ovation, and the winner of the DS Ball the Greatest Dancer of All Time will be announced. Amidst many kisses and more tears this trophy will be sent to the winner, through a medium if necessary.

Gypsy Rose Lee
Michael Jackson
Pamela Stephenson
Fred Astaire
Madonna
Matthew Cutler
Ginger Rogers
John Sergeant
Martha Graham
Gene Kelly
Anna Pavlova
Michael Flatley

Remember to save your candidate,
vote in the First Round ,
vote in the Final from Christmas Day.

Keeeeep dancing.

Ah.... just seen you have added them on a later thread op, so in the mean time i will go with!............Kara.......................

None of these - Fred Astaire. Nijinski was doing well but fell at the sixth fence.

Now where did I put that video of The Dance of Seven Veils Craig gave a 10 to.

I have to follow the time honoured tradition on Digital Spy and suggest that there might be some judging bias here leading to an overmarking of some of the candidates? I notice that the 'nice' personalities such as Kara and Darcey are doing well in the poll whereas the more controversial personalities of Salome and Mata Hari are trailing behind suggesting that people have unfairly taken against them. That and the fact that Salome never had the opportunity to show her more 'wacky' side by performing the Charleston.

As someone who does jazz and modern, I think you've missed out important people in the history of those dance forms:

Mattox and Fosse for jazz and Laban for modern (although he was a choreographer)

Apologies for all the fantastic dancers missed out. Unfortunately the BBC dance floor can accommodate at most 17. All complaints please send to BBC website.

And the The Dance of Seven Veils is it this one that you misplaced?

The funniest thing is that Aida Gomez (Salome in the clip) is actually one of the judges in the Spanish version of Stricly. Weird!

As a side note, all those videos are excerps from movies by renowned film director Carlos Saura (who incidently is from the same are of Spain as myself). He loves flamenco and has done many movies featuring prominently.
