Just read Boy in The Striped Pyjamas - loved the book but the film was pants.

Just started to read Only Time Will Tell. Really not enjoying it. Hoping it gets better but the writing style is so bland and boring.

I remember reading that a long time ago and finding it very compelling, in fact the only PD James I really liked.

Just finished The Outcast - Sadie Jones. Not completely convincing in the end, maybe tending toward a bit too much melodrama, but I couldn't put it down; very well written.

Whiteout by Ken Follett. I had never read any of his books before, but code to zero was in the holiday home I just stayed in, and it was great! Whiteout was also there but I didn't have time to finish it, so I had to download it on my kindle!

Just started The Chrysalids by John Wyndham - I read it in school (ummm 30 years ago) and it's one of the few books we were made to read that I enjoyed so I thought I's revisit it - a rarity for me as I hardly ever read a book more than once.

Cry Of The Halidon - Robert Ludlum

I'm getting the very vague impression that I may have already read this book.

I would be interested to hear what you think of it. I loved the Rebus books but for no apparent reason I haven't yet tried any of his other books. I suspect that I am wary of finding them a let down!

Bought this book off ebay, having read the recommendation in the 'recommend one book' thread.
Thoroughly enjoyable read - can't put it down.

So finished The Kon-Tiki Expedition which was throughly enjoyable. It left me with a taste for the exotic so I'm onto The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles. A bit turgid so far but we'll see,

Ken Follett - The Pillars of the Earth. I got it for Christmas but kept putting it off because it's so long - but it's not a chore to read at all!

Hmmm. Right then. I've read all bar a couple of the Rebus books so I know where you're coming from.

In my opinion, if you didn't know who wrote The Flood, you probably wouldn't think it was the same guy who created Rebus.

I didn't find the book a letdown although I was disappointed with the ending (trying not to give anything away here) and it was, almost inevitably, a dark, sombre book.

Don't know if that's any help to you, but I can say that, in the main, I did enjoy the book.

Thanks for that feedback, doffer, I really appreciate it. I think I will give it and his other non-Rebus books a whirl. The point you make that convinces me to read them is the part of your post I put in bold. I just don't want the book to be a Rebus style book without Rebus. Thanks again

I've just finished The Mill on the Floss - when I say 'finished' I mean I skim read the last 70 pages wondering when a real story was going to begin... suffice to say I wouldn't read it again

I'm now re-reading The Other Boleyn Girl as I'm dabbling with writing the Tudor time at the moment (and when I say writing, I don't mean for publication so this will do as research )
