Just finished reading Will Self's How the Dead Live. Got into this after reading his excellent (if you can understand the Mockney) Book of Dave.

How the Dead Live is funny, sad and a slightly warped re-imagining of modern society. I feel slightly embarrassed about enjoying this book , being a grumpy mature male my heart tells me this is a "used to be a chick" book best read with a box of kleenex to hand. But, Self's wit and cynical outlook really hit the mark for me on the two books mentioned.

Currently trying to get into his Great Apes, but finding it really hard.
I loved Dave, particularly the motoring-themed language "the headlights in the dashboard". I tried his version of Dorian after that but found it really really disapointing. Too dark and manevolent. Made you feel like you neede a shower after reading.

I must give some of his other stuff a go.

"Margot Fonteyn" by Meredith Daneman.

It's interesting but the level of detail makes it hard work at times.

The Shining - Stephen King.

It's an oldie but I hope a goodie. The start seems rather slow though, nothing's really happened yet.

Have just read Anne Holt's 1222. Interesting take on a modern-day Christie, I guessed the murderer fairly soon, I have to say.

Don't know what to read next: Lackberg's Stonecutter; Peter Robinsons The Price of Love, I've yet to read one of his; or Grange's Stone Council.

Aberystwyth Mon Amour by Martin Pryce.

A private eye tale and a who done it.
It's Raymond Chandler meets The League of Gentlemen in Aberystwyth. The town is run by Druids in their sharp Swansea suites, hanging around the toffee apple dens, creaming all the profits from the speak easy rock emporiums and the 24hr whelk stalls.
Extremely bizarre, extremely unusual and extremely funny.
I may give this a try. I lived in Aberystwyth for 3 years, must admit I never saw any druids in sharp Swansea suits

The author and his boyfriend's journey to adopting their son. Really well written, I love it!

I loved this book - I'd not heard of the author either, it's brilliant though!

"Chickens,Mules and Two Old Fools" by Victoria Twead which has a very poor beginning but grows on you as you read.

I do wish Victoria Twead would make her beginning more reader friendly. It irritated me and wasn't until they actually got to the old house in Spain and met the locals that the book became interesting.

The recipes of spanish tapas and cooking are fantastic although nothing new to me.
Oh dear, *squirms*. So sorry to read this as I’m the author of ‘Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools’. Happily, ‘Chickens’ is still an Amazon Bestseller and people can sample the beginning before they make their minds up. Please tell me what irritated you about the start so that I don’t make the same mistake in the sequel I’m finishing.

Victoria

Chris Brookmyre - Where The Bodies Are Buried. A bit disappointing - a very straightforward police vs gangerster procedural, kind of Rebus-y. Not farcical, not cartoon-violent, not funny, not political, not ranty... I mean, it was quite a good procedural, but not what I want from Brookmyre.

Naked by David Sedaris- a hilarious and touching autobiography in the form of a series of self-contained essays.

Next up- Embassytown by China Mieville. If that's not awesome then I'll eat my hat.
