Does the box update its firmware automatically through the satellite from the option within the menu, or do you have to download the updates through the Humax website and install them via USB?

Does either way have the same effect?

When new firmware is being transmitted the box will auto update overnight if left in sby or on user request. Upgrading by USB has the same result for firmware upgrades. Loader updates can only be done by usb. V 1.00.14 should be transmitted early in the new year

Not yet. But once it's released you'll find the release notes here

Out of curiosity, I had a look inside the most recent upgrade archive. The contents are interesting (and frustrating).

The .hdf file is an archive common to all Humax upgrades (there are tools out there to unpack it). The contents are:

* A Linux kernel
* A root file system (including uclibc, busybox and its telnetd)
* Three encrypted file systems, containing the "settop" program and its libraries.

Yes, and you can download all the code for the open source bits from the Humax site. The actual settop box application is, unfortunately, not open source.
