Graham Norton would be my first choice, then maybe Wogan as second -- even though I don't particularly like him, I think he would do a good job as main presenter. I'm not really keen on any of the other names put forward in this thread.

After a reasonable amount of votes has been cast (or a week has passed) the 15-20 people with the most votes will progress to the main vote where I will ask people to rank all finalists.

For now please select up to 5 people you think would make good choices for main Strictly host ”

Favourites in order (I'm a big fan of non-obvious selections)

1. Gabby Logan - Good presenter, can dance
2. Jimi Mistry - Can dance, humorous
3. Anton du Beke - Dancer, can present
4. Erin Boag - Dancer, looks like a potential presenter
5. Kirsty Gallagher - Good presenter, good gymnast,
maybe can dance

DEFINITELY NOT

Barrowman - Too up himself
Michael Ball - Too up himself
Graham Norton - He gets everything !
Jonathan Ross - Too up himself
Aled Jones - Too nice
Gethin Jones - Too nice

My initial reaction is to say anyone - even Brucie - rather than Terry Wogan; I remember him on the old "Come Dancing" and he was absolutely awful, clearly had no respect at all for the dancing let alone the dancers.

Why are so many comedians mentioned? Although the show comes under the "Entertainment" banner, it isn't a comedy, and I for one have had more pathetically written jokes given to Bruce to read.

Wouldn't it be better to have someone who could play it straight - like the presenter of X-Factor (sorry don't know his name), from the little I've seen of that show, he - or someone like him - would be perfect!

Dermot O'Leary. Don't mention him on this forum, as he's linked to The Other Show he's pretty much hated. Personally I think he'd do a good job as he is a good presenter (but why would he leave The Other Show?) but I doubt many people would agree with me.

Never, never, never
Terry Wogan (he's as doddery as Brucie - remember him announcing the wrong winner of the British heat of the Eurovision contest the other year?)
Jonathan Ross
Vernon Kay
Simon Amstell
Richard Hammond

Possibly
Aled Jones
Gethin Jones
Michael Ball
Bill Turnbull
John Barrowman

Firm favourites
Graham Norton
Brian Conley
Paul O'Grady

I agree, it's not a comedy show, but I do think that you need someone with a quick wit who can give a put-down/response to the comments of some (most? ) of the judges.
I also think Graham, Brian, and Paul, have the ability to think on their feet in the case of unforeseen happenings, such as Mark and Karen's 'micgate'.
And all three of them are more than just 'comedians'.

I wouldn't want any of your firm favourites, nelliek!

Gethin Jones is my very, very firm favourite.

Nelliek, I'm liking your firm favourites...although Paul O'Grady definitely would be placed third as you have him.

Gethin, I don't know. He seems a bit too 'vanilla' for me. What I like about Norton, Conley and O'Grady is that they have a bit of grit and waspishness which I think is what's needed when dealing with the judges.

Gethin Jones

Graham Norton - he really is very good on the ALW shows,

Matt Baker.

Sam & Mark

Someone's suggestion of Jason Donovan was good I never thought of him but I doubt the BBC would ever use him.

I agree with you. The show needs someone naturally witty who will play it straight most of the time and leave the high jinx and drama to the likes of Bruno. Dermot is OK - not as good as Ryan Seacrest (American Idol presenter) or Tom Bergeron but his presenting is more their style, which is what the show needs. In its early days it may have needed a big name presenter as no-one knew how the show was going to be received, but 8 series on Brucie is clearly a liability.

People keep mentioning to Micgate thing, like other presenters won't have dealt with it the same way or even better. And that's one "positive" in 8 series - we'd need a separate forum to collate the negatives!

The Wogan, Lionel Blair and Ronnie Corbett mentions are curious. Like the BBC is going to deal with the perennial problem of a doddery unfunny "comedy" presenter long past retirement age by replacing him with....

Matt Baker (first choice - good presenter with dance experience)
Anton du Beke (ditto)
Claudia Winkelman (just like her and why do we have to have a man)
Alesha Dixon (why not? Get her off the judging panel once and for all)
Dermot O'Leary (just to make up the numbers and i don't mind him)

I'm not getting Dermot as a viable option. I loved him on Big Brother's Little Brother but after that he seems to have become quite bland. He doesn't seem like a natural fit to me.

The Wogan (groan), Lionel Blair or Ronnie Corbett - why? And no, no, no.

Gethin vanilla? What rubbish! He isn't at least bland - you don't know him obviously!

He's not Mr. Entertainment though. Nice enough, but you need someone with a little bit of showbiz about them. Aled Jones and Matt Baker suffer from the same lack of spontaneity for me.

1. Tom Bergeron
2. Tom Bergeron
3. Tom Bergeron
4. Tom Bergeron
5. James May

Well, I don't 'know him', no. However what I've seen on tv doesn't light my fire. He's vanilla to me - sorry.

I really feel we don't want a "Mr Entertainment". That is what is wrong with Bruce - too "in your face" and hogging the limelight. We need someone with presenting skills and more low key so that the reall "stars of the show" are to the fore. As Gethin has appeared in panto AND The Rocky Horror Show I think he has the right balance - can dance, is musical and is a good presenter. Not to mention the fact that he is gorgeous! Craig would be happy!

Brian Conley for me - would look good next to Tess. A great all-round presenter and song and dance man, who tell's very good jokes as well. His brother works on the show at the moment. I would not like to see Matt Baker or John Barrowman doing the job - can't bear either of them - too smug.

You need a dynamic of separation - the judges (a grumpy, opinionated rabble), the celebs/pro couple (working hard - usually - needing support under criticism) and then the presenter who has to have enough personality to compete with judges but is sympathetic enough to support the celebs. Personally, I think Gethin, Aled and Matt would be lovely with the contestants (on their level so to speak) but they're not dynamic enough to stand up against the judges.

I think GN can keep the judges in check - with his quick wits - and be empathetic with the contestants, but also a bit removed. Works for me.

I think that rather than keeping 'the judges in check', GN is more likely to add to the noise rather than discourage it...and he makes my teeth itch, so it wouldn't work for me I'm afraid

Quite - that is why I think someone like Geth, Aled or one of the previous contestants would be great.

But they make my teeth itch...soooo, it looks as if Brucie will have to stay so we can all be frustrated.
