Why don't they ever show a repeat of Strictly?

One of the great mysteries of Broadcasting. They show repeats of their other top reality show Apprentice so I don't understand why Strictly is never repeated. I mean X Factor is repeated many times .
The only reason I can think of is, the BBC are desperate for high ratings on a Sat evening and are afraid, if they repeat the show on other days some won't tune in on a Sat.

Why don't they also sell DVD's of the show. I would love to see all the early series again and would purchase copies if it was available on DVD. They would make great presents.

The DVD question I think is to do with the cost of music rights compared to likely profits from sales. I know they have done a 'best of' DVD of a few of the later series. I guess they think at this point not enough people would be interested in buying the earlier series. I don't think they'd ever do a box set of all the episodes in a series- to be honest I doubt there would even be sufficient demand to justify it.

I think the producers see a lot of the ratings success in the fact that viewers can affect the outcome by voting. I would guess they think people wouldn't feel as involved if they repeated an early series where we already know the outcome and can't alter it. If they don't think the ratings will be there, they aren't likely to do it. In my opinion they would do well on BBC3 or BBC4 though- I'd certainly love the opportunity to record them again in better quality!

There are videos of the various dances from the different series's uploaded to Youtube, so try searching for the ones you would like to see.......I would like to see a DVD of outtakes!

They do it somewhere or other, I'm sure I've noticed it whilst browsing through the Sky menu a few times in the mid-to-recent past.

They repeated the whole of series 5 (I think) on watch last year and there was a best of series 6 DVD but maybe it didn't sell as well as they hoped it would because there doesn't seem to be a series 7 one. You can also buy some DVDs of the best dances here:

I bought the jive one though and it seems a bit of a rip off.

I soooo wish they would repeat the earlier series though because I watched it but not obsessively so don't really remember most of it.

That will be "anytime".....I think you can watch the show upto a week after it was broadcast.....just like the i-player.

The "anytime" thing I've never figured out - - is it the red button on the remote? because very few programmes actually appear on that for me...

No it wasn't that. Perhaps I am thinking of the American version then.

They do show a couple of Christmas specials, and those sorts, on Watch.

That's true- they show the Christmas specials and Strictly Ice Dancing from time to time.

I wish they would show Strictly African Dancing again. Darren and Lilia did an African Samba demo on it, which I'd love to have a better copy of.

I don't think its a music rights cost issue, they have music stations playing records 24/7 .
I think lots would be interested in buying box sets of one of the most popular shows in BBC history. I mean they have box sets on sale for all kinds of shows.

I must email them and see what they have to say on the matter.

Katie! Am I dreaming, or is it true - there's a Strictly Ice Dancing and a Strictly African Dancing? When? Where? How can I see clips?

I think the second series (first Autumn one) got repeated on the Sunday, with Bruce and Tess doing a bit of an introduction, was great to watch it for the second time at the weekend. Shame they only did it for one series

In what way is it a rip off? What's it like? I'm really intrigued.

Yes I remember they did repeat a series or maybe two series and I know one of them was the 2006 series with Mark Ramprakash and Karen Harding winning the show.

They were one-off specials shown in 2004 and 2005:
Strictly Ice Dancing
Strictly African Dancing

Strictly Ice Dancing is occasionally repeated on watch, but I've never seen Strictly African Dancing. I've got a recording of Darren and Lilia doing the African Samba though- it's really interesting.

Strictly Ice Dancing was on 2 or 3 times over Christmas on Watch -they may even still be repeating it. I think they tend to run them over Christmas/Easter and bank holidays, like Christmas 2009 was all the Christmas specials.

Strictly Ice Dancing is actually going to be on again next week- 12 Jan, 1.05am to 2.15am on Watch.
