Sinead O' Connor - Nothing Compares To You
Is this the most moving music video ever made? That song is so sad, the lyrics are powerful, her voice is powerful but what really does it is when she has real tears in her eyes and rolliong down her cheek. i don't remember the full story but i remember reading somewhere that she had lost someone close to her at the time and so when she was singing those lyrics she got upset. you can see her breaking down there but keeping it under control and carrying on with the performance. This reminds me of Elton John singing at Princess Di's funeral and really fighting back the tears. Its very moving when you see real emotion like that in a singing performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUiTQvT0W_0

It is a great video.
It's her mother that had died at the time. It's like X Factor, but genuine. I love that song. |

This is an amazing track.
Testament to the talent of Sinead O'Connor for pulling it off (given it was a cover version) and testament to the genius that is Prince, the writer/peformer of the original, who considered this a 'minor' album track. Prince in the 1980s was a talent like no other. And Sinead made this her own. |

the original is far better, sinead sings it horribly. the video is crap too prince removed his original vocals from the master tapes when st pauls voice was added. there is also an unreleased version of the family version that has drums similar to sineads version, but it's unlikely she or anyone involved in her cover version heard this it is a great song, and an unusual choice for a cover as the family album, whilst a great protoge album, didn't do very well, even though it's basically a prince album with someone else on lead vocals. prince pretty much wrote and played everything on it (drummer bobby z wrote one track) prince also gave away tracks like manic monday, and even kiss, although when he heard what mazarati did with his rough demo, he took it back and put his lead vocal, added the guitar licks and voila, the hit single. chaka khan also had a hit covering i feel 4 u from his second album, and a couple of people had hits covering kiss, such as tom jones and age of chance. whilst he hates people covering his work, he's one of the most covered artists, which is unusual for an artist still writing, recording and performing live btw when prince finally met sinead, they ended up having a pillow fight! |

Not taking away from Sinead or implying anything by the way, but have had to read this story over the years many times ! An excellent cover though Iove Prince's original as much |

I've got to be honest I've never been a big fan of that song. I remember when it came out and I thought it was just boring. I still think that now.

The live version of Troy off the first album's promo video used to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

It's an amazing song, so haunting. Sinead has such a beautiful voice. I know it's been reported she's had her troubles in the past and her facebook posts are erratic - I hope she finds happiness and peace, she always seems like such a lovely lady being interviewed. She comes across as just a plain, normal woman who just happens to be gifted with a great talent. The video for NCTY is so powerful, in particular when it gets to the tears part

It is a great version and video, but it doesn't personally move me too much. I'm sure most people have songs that choke them up, not always the most obvious songs you can think of, but something personal to them.

It's one of the few songs that can move me to tears no matter how often I hear it. The video is stunning. I was shocked when I found it it was originally a Prince song. Sinead took the concept of making a song your own to another level.

It's a shame really, because no one thinks of Prince when they hear the title.

but she just did a straight copy of the original studio version, so how is that making a song her own? most folk wouldn't have heard the original. perhaps like most folk wouldn't be familiar with dolly parsons version of I will always love you, but whitneys version was in a different style

I like Sinead's version but I loved the work Prince did with his proteges, Taja Sevelle, Sheena Easton, Sheila E etc. I thought Tyka Nelson was good too. Mark Anthony's Tune is a tune!
the other stuff he did was mostly stuff he had already created and he just let the other artists replace his vocal with theirs. sheila e was a bit more involved as they were "dating", and the first two time albums were morris playing drums whilst prince played bass and then prince doing all the rest. the protoges basically got tracks that were leftovers from other projects or didn't fit with his normal albums. kiss was another track he gave away, but then reclaimed for himself |

I'm a huge Prince fan, but I find his version really boring in comparison. Sinead's version is wonderful.
I met Sinead O'Connor a few weeks back at Perth Airport, West Australia, and had a cigarette with her in a non-smoking zone. She's a lovely sort. |
