barbs should really be kept in shoals of 6 or more ... they are very unhappy nervous fish without them i would pressume.

Barbs are mildy aggressive so it's important not to mix them with fish such as Neon Tetras, Harlequins or Guppies. I'm surprised you have Corys Catfish in there but hopefully they'll be ok! The fin-nipping tendency of Tiger Barbs is reduced if they are kept in a shoal of at least 5-6 individuals.

Gouramis and Sharks (Rainbow, Red Tail, White Tip) would be compatible with the Barbs, as would Eels and Loaches (e.g. Cloud Loacesh). But don't keep too many as all the fish in this group have a tendency to get quite big and therefore need room.

Hope that helped a bit

I see Mollys & Platys are compatable but i don't want to mix sexes therefore is it better to have say 4 males or 4 females.

do not mix gourami with barbs, those long trailing front fins will be nipped off in no time.

what is your tank size and filtration? this will determin some species you definately wont be able to keep. for example, rainbow and red tailed black sharks are 1 per tank and need at least a 4ft tank.

to start with you really need to bulk out the schools of barbs though, its not fair to keep them in such small amounts. they need 6 or more to a group and this should be considered minimum. you can mix different types of tiger barbs though, so maybe try 2 normal, 2 green and 2 albino to create your group of 6. then add another 4 gold barbs. after this, it depends how large your tank is as to whether you will be able to add any other types of fish.

if your tank is large enough then you can add a few platys, or even mollys if the tank is large as they can reach 4" long. 1 male to 2-3 females would be best, the fry will easily be picked off by the other fish if they do breed.

Not with Corys. Mollies like brackish water and Platies like a bit of aquarium salt - Cory's need water with NO salt.

im a bit confused on 2 things. a 4ft tank which holds only 16-17 gallons and also the stocking. 2 gold barbs and 2 tiger barbs or 3 tiger barbs

what are your exact tank dimensions, go get a tape measure and post them up, im intrigued, if the tank is 48" long then it must be very skinny and low

So it's quite a shallow 3ft tank?

My maths is pants this time of night so lets agree 75lt.

That's not huge, but you could certainly beef up your barb shoal. I'd be reluctant to add a shark as they may outgrow the tank although a Redtail would probably be OK with Barbs. Again the size would make me reluctant to suggest another shoaling fish like Danios as you'd need to add another 8 fish - even though smaller.

A Male Betta would get ripped to shreds.

Not being very helpful am I?

Found THIS link with apparently compatible tank mates for the Barbs. Just check any of them for salt requirements (for the salt-free corys) , other environmental requirements (temp, ph mostly) and make sure at least one other website or aquatic centre agrees

hmm, that rules out any sharks in my opinion, i have a red tailed black shark, and its a very docile one but even so it will defend the whole of the bottom of my 48"x20" footprint tank. corys are quite often chased around so in smaller i would say its a no go.

add another 4 of the tiger and the gold barbs, as i said before you can mix and match the different colours of tigers so you will get a variation on the look of the fish, and then you will have 2 schools of 6 fairly large fish when fully grown. with the corys too i would not add any other types of fish. the tank will be at its stocking limit in my opinion. any more and the tank will struggle to stay stable between your weekly partial water changes. also, if you do overstock the fish are likely to stress which could leave you with illness and disease in your tank, really not fair on the tank inhabitants or your wallet! with the types of fish you have, it will be a very full looking tank with lots going on when you have bulked out the schools.

adding pairs of these different coloured ones will bulk out your school and add different looks to your tank, they also school well together. i wouldnt have more than 6-8 tigers in total and 6-8 golden in total though, you will be maxing out your stocking if you go more IMO.

Added another 2 red colored barbs and 4 Danios about 2 weeks ago they are getting on great and really adds to the look of the tank.
