Bought an 02 iphone....

Hey all

i just purchased an iphone 3g off of ebay. trouble is, i do not know really how to work it or anything. I know my sim is not 3g. So i have applied on the 02 website for a new sim, so i take it, that this new sim will be 3g once it arrived. Can i change my existing number onto the new sim?

Also, the phone used to be a contract o2 iphone, is it difficult to change the settings from pay monthly to pay as you go?

I have heard there is a special bolt on i can send for that will enable me to top up and get like free wifi etc ? is this true.

Also, with my iphone, if i am in an area that has free wifi etc, can my iphone connect to this wifi internet?

thanks
Sorry for all the questions
If i do not make any sense im also sorry.

Have a look at the iPhone section of the O2 website, there are details of changing the settings and the bolt-on.
You can call O2 and have all your details transferred to a new 3g SIM.

You will need to get a PAC (port authorisation code) from your existing SIM provider (T-Mo, Orange, Three, Voda etc), just ring up and ask them for it, some will give it straight away, some will want to send it in writing. Once you have that code, ring O2 with it and they'll take over your old number on to your new SIM. It takes a little while (about 5 days I've found) so you might need to use your old phone until the swapover happens (they'll tell you what date that's likely to happen).

The OP is already on O2 and simply needs a newer 3G enabled SIM.
Porting now completes in 2 working days,

Best thing to do (to make the phone 'your own' as such) is to connect to iTunes and 'factory reset' the handset. This has the effect of making the phone as it was when it was first taken from it's box, new.

To swap O2 sims on your account, to replace an old one with a new one, go to www.o2.co.uk/swapmysim

Sorry, misunderstood. 3G should be able to be enabled at the operator side unless the SIM is positively ancient.

It would still be locked to O2 if it was a phone provided by O2 in the first place.

That's right, but not an issue here as the OP is on O2.
Unlocks and jailbreaks are cheap enough though, should the need ever arise.

It sounds like the original poster is pretty new to smartphones. I think getting the phone working normally is probably enough for them at the moment. Jailbreaking isn't overly complex to the more technically minded, but might be a step too far for the average mobile user, many of whom have come to smartphones via the iPhone.

hey everyone!! thanks so much for all your help.

Just found out the iphone 3g was a pay as you go 02 phone.
Which makes it a little easier for me to set it up.

From what i have read here, so i connect it to my itunes and restore the iphone to factory settings when i get it?

also i have had my sim card for about 6 years now, will it be too old to ring up 02 and ask them to enable it for 3g? i have already sent off for a new 3g sim, but i will have to get the number changed for it.

thanks

Give it a go! When you ring up, make sure to ring the customer service line for iPhone though, I've found them to be more helpful!

I use a PAYG simm (o2) from 2005. Just had a G1 android unlocked and put in my simm and hey presto it just worked.

o2 Simplicity PAYG is good, different tarrifs but for £15 a month you get 100 any network minutes, half a gig internet and a shed load of free texts.

http://freesim.o2.co.uk/5qzQ83Kj?cm_...l+YBA+TBjw0zgf

Phone them up on your mobile and they will switch you to Simplicity there and then, no waiting about.

Not if he follows your advice in post #5, doing an upgrade through iTunes will update his firmware and baseband and there is no easy (or even untethered) jailbreak for the newest firmware and there is NO unlock at all.

Best not to allow iTunes to upgrade if it asks, and check somewhere like iclarified or Redmondpie for advice about restoring or updating.

Ok......

my ipone 3g 02. was orginally an 02 pay as you go. So if i link it up to my itunes to put on songs and apps, should i not restore the phone??

would this revert it to a contract style phone? or would it be ok.

I just want to make sure the phone will be set for my sim
I got some new 02 sims in the post. I will load it onto thephone and phone up 02 to ask them to change the number so i can keep my own. Is this all i need to do?
is there a special bolt on i can text for that will get me free wifi etc?

Restore the phone to update the software. It will make no difference to you. A bolt on is available, which you need to ask O2 about when you contact them to swap numbers over.
