Not a good day at all for the loss of talented musicians.
Mick died today at the far too young age of 52.

RIP.

God, this news really cuts me up.... I knew he had cancer, but you always hope for a miracle..

Poor Mick - He was one of the most copied musicians in the '80s. Still hugely underrated.

RIP

I'm so sad to read this news. Japan were at the start of my musical journey. Sleep tight Mick.

OMG, that is terrible. I had no idea he was ill. His guitar playing was so recognisable and I loved Japan. In fact it will be 30 years ago this coming December I saw them live
R.I.P. Mick

My husband toured with Japan back in the day and we got to know Mick pretty well. Not only was he an extremely innovative and gifted musician, but he was a truly lovely man.

R.I.P Mick.

Its a shame it isnt getting more coverage in the news. Gerry Rafferty is the headline and Zane Lowe even played Baker Street, but I would say that Mick had more hits and is probably more influencial on the current crop of musicians. Dont want to push Gerry off the page, just put Mick there AS WELL. R.I.P. both of them.

Agreed; whilst Gerry was talented, he was ultimately only known for one track, where Mick was more influential, and definitely had more chart successes.

Mick had been ill for quite a few years, things were definitely getting tough for him, my thoughts go out to those who knew him.

I think one of the reasons that Karn's death is difficult to comprehend is that Japan split and effectively "disappeared" from the pop music scene when they were all still quite young. Their music and image was always innovative and futuristic. To a fan of their music growing up; it seemed like they would never get old and die.

This is indeed sad news. I knew he was very ill, but even so .

I always really loved the sound of Mick's bass on those Japan tracks. Really unique and instantly recognisable; even today there's still nobody sounds like that, although the influence on modern artists is there, of course, as his legacy.

RIP.

OMG, don't believ it. I used to see Japan befiore they hit it big, when they used to play at the Camden palace almost every week.
As a bass player myself, i used to think his style and technique was sublime.

Gobsmacked.....such an innovative talent and not properly or widely recognised as such.
Find it hard to think of one of my idols dead so young.
RIP Mick.

As 'Quiet Life' plays in the background, I can only add to those paying tribute to a massively under-rated yet hugely influential musician. Mick contributed heavily to Japan's much-imitated sound and, whilst copied, was never equalled.

'Genius' is a term much overused but I'd apply to Mick's bass-playing without doubt. I just wish we'd heard more of it and will treasure the tracks he plays on.

RIP Mick - gone but never forgotten ...

I'm not a massive Japan fan but I love Dali's Car.

I knew Mick wasn't well but it was only on this thread that I'd read he'd gone. Very sad.

I can't pretend to know all his songs but I can tell his rubbery bass a mile off and "Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters" is a brilliant album.

I've listened to Japan, the Rain Tree Crow and David Sylvians music for longer than I care to remember, but prior to this week hadn't listened to any of Dali's Car.

Its absolutely stunning!

I also read that he was in some discussions to work with Duran Duran on their latest album, but sadly it didn't come to anything. Would have been very interesting to hear his bass work on a Duran Duran album.
