caterwauling

The ex neighbours male cat who is now a permanent outside cat with no home (neighbours feed him) has started jumping on my lounge window sill and caterwauling.

My cat (male) then jumps on the window sill and walks up and down slowly. He doesn't caterwaul but he does like a really noisy load of swallowing and he'll pound the window with his paws which he does when he wants to go out sometimes. I don't mean to be thick because the cat outside hasn't done this before. Is he teasing my cat because he knows he's not coming out or is he trying to claim my cats territory.

I've noticed mine has started weeing up every bush we have in the back garden. It's quite funny to watch them both but obviously I don't like to think my cat may be stressing by it or a fights brewing.

Are they playing?

No, they're not playing. Their sizing one another up...and soon if your cat cannot get outside, it'll sound as though you've a full-grown pig in the house, snorting and grunting, who'll launch himself at the door in an effort to get outside.

Not a nice situation is 'brewing'. Your cat has a territory to defend and nothing good is coming of this cat parading around peeing on your cat's scent-points.

Quite what you do I don't know. If the neighbour's cat is not a 'tom' then I'd allow your cat to defend himself and his territory. If it is a tom then I wouldn't let them both meet as you'll have a vet bill on your hands. Instead, I'd have a word with the neighbours in an effort to contain the tom. It's not his fault, it's in his instincts to protect and acquire territory. But your cat will suffer.

Oh my I don't like the sound of that. Mine and the other cat are both males but they've lived next door to each other for 6 years or so now. The neighbours moved and didn't take their cat with them so he has to survive permanently outside. He's been in that situation for over 2 years now though. I just don't understand why he's started sizing mine up. They've never been the best of mates but the other ones a lot older than mine and doesn't really tolerate being decked and rolled around the floor which is what my cat has a tendancy to do with the other cats.

Should I let mine out as soon this one gets on the window sill to stop it brewing into something worse or is that a bad idea? They're both outside when I let mine out and have been for the last 6 years
