I can't afford an IPhone, so can someone recommend me an equivalent, or even, better

Get a droid X, that phone is meant to be good. It was seen as a formidable competitor to the iphone this summer.. and I think its around £199 or cheaper

Go to your local phone store and ask about Android, Windows Phone 7 and Palm Pre 2 Phones. Try them all out and see which you like best!

Alternatively, get a simple phone and an iPod touch.

Although it's a few months old now, the original Desire is still a great phone and is on some very good deals now that everyone is after the Desire HD and Desire Z. Another good alternative that's a bit more expensive but cheaper than the iPhone is the Galaxy S. Both run Android, which is a lot more flexible than iOS, but has a steeper learning curve. If you want ease of use, look into Windows Phone 7 - the Mozart or Trophy should be available on a decent deal.

There's nothing quite like the iPhone.

I'm typing this from my HTC Desire, which people will say is a good challenger to iPhone, but is still very clumsy in my opinion.

I've spent a good 10 minutes trying to write this post, which would have taken 1 minute on an iphone.

It's difficult editing already typed text, the keyboard is more narrow, even if you can revert it to older style keyboards, and the browser has a cheap, jumpy feel to it.

The internal storage of HTC phones is rubbish, which does matter and there's not enough decent apps, contrary to what people say.

There are no decent alternatives in my opinion. I would buy a cheap iPod Touch and a cheap phone with a good battery life.

The San Fran still has the best screen for anything below £200.
Its also available in Argos(£90+£10) and various other web sites.

The next step up is the £250 mark for faster CPUs.
Also note that with competition from ARM A9(Tegra 2 etc ) its safe to expect fast ARM A8 equipped phones to be in budget £100 phones in 12 months time.

The iPhone still a pain to edit text on though if you new to it. It's just what you are used to.

And to be fair the redesigned Android keyboard in Gingerbread is a significant improvement. IMO it is now on a par with the iPhone. I have happily ditched all of the additional keyboard apps I have tried (even swype) and can 'type' much faster and accurately using the native application.

You could get a Droid X, but you wouldn't be able to use it.

It is only compatible with CDMA2000 networks, which we don't use in the UK.

Desire HD is free on select vodafone tarrifs. Has a bigger screen, and who gives a damn about internal storage when you get a 16GB card with it. The internets faster by a country mile than the 3G iPhone phone and it also does HD video, but has an 8 meg camera to edge it.

I used an Iphone 4 for a few weeks and thought it was rubbish, but then again I hate everything apple because they are so up themselves.

i know someone who's got that mobile now and they're very pleased with it. They were gobsmacked by the number of Android apps that were available for it!
