Do people actually listen to music anymore?
Or is it more a case of background noise to fill a gap in their increasingly busy lives.
Do people form their own opinions or are told what to like. Examples are X-Factor and Radio One plugging artists like Jessie J. There was a time when music used to mean something, not knock out some two-bit tune and repeat a few words over and over. |

I very much listen to music on a daily basis, but I agree with your last sentence... kind of. Chart music is getting more and more throwaway and record labels are scared to invest. They want a smash instantly and don't allow time or money for someone to find their place. One failure and they're usually gone.

I had a good listen to some Nine Inch Nails this morning. Just me, my headphones and a big joint!
![]() But funny you should mention it, I was reading an article written by ex Depeche Mode synth supremo Alan Wilder yesterday, he said the same. Although it was mainly just a moan about the state of todays music industry but he did make some good points...in between his grumpy old man moan-a-thon. Things have changed Al..get over it and move on!

He was moaning that when Daniel Miller sold Mute records to EMI they had a look at the catalogue, saw Mode, Goldfrapp and Nick Cave were the money spinners and decided they wanted to cut the rest...including Wilders Recoil project. Miller was very much about the artists and letting them experiment and get on with stuff but EMI said different. |

Hence why i listen to the xfactor contestants music, the saturdays' music, and scouting for girls' music, and ignore everyone on these forums. |

Aw good for you. But I'll put my left testicle on it that you won't be listening to any of them in 20 years time...hence the 'throw away' comment.
![]() but i'm not going to judge a song on whether it's going to be a legendary hit, I just want to enjoy music! Everyone on here slates bands for 'throwaway', 'meaningless' music, well what happened to just enjoying it? |

Look at Just Can't Get Enough, royally cheesy but a brilliant song and oh so very much of it's time (1981). |

I can't enjoy something that purely exists for the $'s. I don't want to sound like an old hippie but it's gotta mean something and come from the heart!

This was another point by Al.

Miller was very much about the artists and letting them experiment and get on with stuff but EMI said different. I think I'm lucky that I listen to acts on more independent labels (not saying everyone is, but most of them are given more freedom than most - even if they are on an branch label of the big 4). I mean, some of the acts I listen to are on labels such as One Little Indian, V2, Sub Pop, XL, Palophone (has some big acts but seems to let them do their own thing, or at least some of them anyway). But the sad thing is many smaller labels are nor just branches of larger ones so they start to get pressured into making more money rather than producing talent. I love it when acts develop and don't produce the same album time after time, or eventually go down a route to please the masses (often called "selling out"). I just hope the people I like don't follow that trend! |

Because pointless, throwaway music is generally crap. It might be alright for a few listens in the car on the way to work for a week but after that it has no substance and grows tired very quickly.
The Mute/EMI thing was a disaster. It's even bitten Goldfrapp in the bum now. They've parted ways after their contract ended, presumably because of creative differences and budgets being cut. I think I'm lucky that I listen to acts on more independent labels (not saying everyone is, but most of them are given more freedom than most - even if they are on an branch label of the big 4). I remember when Screamadelica became huge. Sony approached McGee who owned Creation records asking if they could buy Primal Scream off him. He told them where to get off but they wanted them that bad they just bought Creation from him instead!! |

i know this has been discussed many a time, but i was watching this performance...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daCdh...eature=related and her vocals really stand out, and don't sound too bad? clearly she's better at hitting the higher notes, so why on earth do they make her sing the lower ones? any ideas?

I listen to music every day, in fact my ipod needs a charge every couple of days
I agree about "throwaway" music though, a lot of X Factor winners singles fall into that category.

Absolutely.
I listen to music daily. It's a big part of my life, always has been.I tend not to listen to the radio for the reason you pointed out, although I do have some chart artists on my itunes playlist. I like to know what a song's about, so listening to the lyrics is a huge part of it for me. |

![]() I listen to a lot of music, mostly on the radio. I don't buy music anymore though. If I hear a track I really like, I'll just find it on youtube. For instance, I really like Mark Lanagan and Isobel Campbell's single, but it doesn't make me want to buy the album. I'm actually gutted about Mark Lamarr's R2 show 'God's Jukebox' ending. I found so much new music through that show. Why buy an album, when you have an absolute music specialist picking out 3 hours of the best tracks from all over the world each week? Yeah, still gutted about that ending. Still at least I've got other music shows that are also great- Don Letts, Jarvis Cocker and Marc Riley, to name but three. |

I can't remember the last time I bothered with chart music. I don't even know who is Number 1.
I listen to music I enjoy. At the moment am loving Train. |

I cannot stand Train, but it's only because the people I live with sing that bloody song constantly... the "hey hey, heeeeeeeey" one! Arrrrgh! *pulls hair out*
![]() I do like Drops of Jupiter, though. I quite like that. I love Drops of Jupiter. Took me ages to find out what it was called (only found out last year!) but love it.

They're not really the type of band I'd normally listen to but they're not bad. The reason I chose to ignore them is simply because I have had three months of that song day in and day out

Chart music in this country is shocking. It's all full of Urban trash and Simon Cowell pip pop crap. Not only do I blame Scowell himself but I also blame the likes of commercial radio for encouraging such rubbish, especially the likes of The Wanted
.I do still listen to music mind, I wouldn't be normal without it. I do listen to mainly rock/indie music but I do like a lot Australian bands too. |

what a stupid question, really!!
Like tarring everyone with the same brush again, so you're assuming that EVERYONE watches the XFactor and listens to Radio1?? A LOT of people out there still go gigging, and make time in their 'busy lifes' to consume new music... Discovering new music has changed. It doesnt mean that the people who buy it have. |
