I don't want to watch people getting through who can't skate because they're in a soap and just died a famous death...but I managed to survive.

Celebrities are those whose supposed achievements are celebrated. Of all of those persons appearing on this show, Beharry is the one most fitting of celebration. He did not ask for fame , it was thrust upon him and whilst he would much rather "soldier on", the injuries he received prevent him from doing so, so he makes use of his unlooked for fame to obtain support for those of his brother soldiers who do not have things handed to them.

And for those who are ignorant of such things, it has always been the case that heroes have been lauded by society.

I only watched the results program, but I can't help worrying that he will fall and hurt him self I am sure he won't.

I was holding my breath every time Hilary Jones skated last year in case he fell and did himself a mischief. His skating was so stiff and tentative.

I am inclined to agree that this really isn't the place to promote Help for Heroes. It is demeaning the good cause I feel.

Also do you think the other contestants will now feel at a disadvantage because he will surely get the sympathy vote? Luckily he does appear to be able to skate reasonably well.

Robin said his skating was excellent but he needed to work hard on the performance... as did Jason.

I for one enjoyed his performance - what he did on the ice showed just how far hard work can take you in 3 months as his initial Bambi impersonation had me dreading what he would actually do!

If he is all about the achievement in skating then good luck to him. If he is going to be all about the sympathy vote, I will turn cold rapido. I expect he'd rather be fairly judged on his skating abilities. Having said that, Jason needs to cop himself on. Johnson was better than some and marked less by Jason.

Of the last 3 people to receive the VC he is the only one who survived. It is a very rare award.

I believe there may be just a few very, very elderly recipients still alive, one a Ghurka.

Im sorry, but he has absolutely demeaned his VC by appearing on this turgid, trashy show.

With the amount of celeb reality shows there are now they must be running low on traditional 'celebs'. Maybe this will open the doors for more unsung heroes to participate like the nurse someone mentioned earlier who works her whole life saving others.

Look at the New Years honours list - the media used to only mention the famous people getting honours. At least these days they also mention some of the everyday people who get honours for their good works.

No reason at all why this wonderfully brave chap shouldn't participate and I hope he does well.

I do strongly suspect that the decision for him to participate was more made by his superiors than himself! He doesn't strike me as the type to big himself up.

First off, the definition of 'celebrity' is now totally warped. The idea that someone is now only allowed to be a celebrity if they fit the narrow 'Heat/Hello article' profile is stupid. Celebrity has its roots in celebration - people being known and admired for their achievements.

We're so used to having vapid types on these shows that it's quite a shock to have someone with a real, admirable backstory decide to enter the world of reality TV. I don't know what the producers' agenda was in asking him, but if he feels it's the right thing for him to do - regardless of whether it's to earn money for charity or to raise his own public profile - then his participation is just as valid as anybody else asked to do the show.

At least you can point to exactly what the man has achieved in his lifetime. Anyone else struggling to do the same for Chloe Madeley?

I'm only going to say this once because I'l probably get lynched, but it's only my opinion OK so let me say it? I don't like war, I don't like guns, and to me the whole idea of celebrating people who sign up to get into boats and helicopters to go to another country and kill their fellow men is disturbing. BUT I am trying to suspend my prejudice, not judge people, keep in mind that just because I don't agree with people, it doesn't make them wrong, and wish Johnson Beharry well. I do admire his bravery and feel compassion for what he's been through, and he seems like a likeable person.

I just wish people wouldn't force this Help for Heroes thing down our throats all the time. They may be your heroes, but I reserve the right to choose mine for myself. Kerry Katona is much maligned for some of the daft things she's done in her life, but at least she's never taken up arms against a fellow human being.

Although according to those I know who have met her, there's a queue waiting to take up arms against her

"I do admire his bravery and feel compassion for what he's been through, and he seems like a likeable person".

This - and the fact that he's having a go at a new challenge in order to further rehabilitate after his injuries - and not doing too badly at it - is why I think he deserves his place.

Yep I agree!! Marvellous man..... extraordinary bravery.... but I too am scratching my head as to what he is doing on DOI and more to the point, is he going to get the sympathy vote every week !

More to the point.......... DOI can be very dangerous and I am suprised a man who obviously has had extensive head injuries in the past would even consider taking part in this !!!

Perhaps it should include a wider range of people who have accomplishments/achievements/barriers they have overcome - and who now want to take on a new challenge - so that it ceases to be simply a "frothy celebrity show". I have long since felt the need to know who all the contestants are and am more interested in what they do on the show.

I don't think he got the sympathy vote last night!

Robin Cousins (who I believe is quite knowledgeable where skating is concerned ) said that Johnson's actual SKATING was technically very good and he needed to work on the presentation side of his performance.

His efforts last night were better than several of the others - notably Steven, Nadia and Angela and he quite rightly wasn't in the bottom 3 (the person who put Laura there was Steven - not Johnson)

Assuming that next weeks show produces a similar standard of skater, I can see Johnson's skating carrying him through for several weeks yet, as while he is nowhere near the top of the heap - he's definitely not down at the bottom either!

Given the injury he suffered - he is probably still on long term sick leave / restricted duties while he recovers - and I can see this helping his rehabilitation as well as raising the profile of Help for Heroes (to whom he is donating his entire fee for appearing!)

....and they clearly aren't taking any risks with him as was seen wearing a helmet in training.
