DVD Recorder Queries.

I have a few queries about DVD-R & DVD-RW media, and having read the manual with my DVD recorder I am no clearer.

Firstly, my recorder talks about DVD compatability mode, and modes I and II. Having read the description of this and why to use it I am none the wiser! Can anyone explain this simply.

Secondly, if I finalise a DVD-RW disc so that I can share it with friends or family, can I then reformat that disc when I get it back to allow me to re-use it?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Its Toshiba RD-XS32 and I have read the manual, but not been able to see answers to these queries in plain understandable english!
